Work is scheduled to begin October 04 and continue through December 17, 2010. The treatment is planned to extend from Three Mile Creek to Five Mile Road and encompass previous treatments from years past. This vegetation management project is designed to improve the Upper Sevier River watershed conditions, enhance crucial mule deer winter range, improve sage grouse habitat, and reduce hazardous fuels within the wildland urban interface. Work efforts will be visible from the Five Mile Road and adjacent public road systems. Vegetation in these areas will be removed using chainsaws and will be conducted in an environmentally friendly manner, creating a mosaic pattern and leaving islands of treated and untreated vegetation. This project is in addition to a 1750 acre mechanical treatment located in South Canyon, both projects will be conducted at approximately the same time. The mechanical thinning of pinyon and juniper trees is one of many treatment options used by land management agencies and provides ecological benefits to various locations throughout southern Utah. Successful results of this project include promoting more productive, desirable grasses, forbs and shrubs to return to the site. Additional benefits include reduced soil erosion, better wildlife habitat, enhanced water quality and quantity, and lowered risk of wildfire to southern Utah communities. This is a cooperative project between the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Utah Partners for Conservation and Development (UPCD), a statewide consortium of local sportsmen groups, landowners, and other state and federal partners. SPORTS SIDE LINES By Mack Oetting CUB REPORTORS IAN ANDERSON AND JANTZEN ORTON The Bob Cats Baseball team took out Piute 15 to 1. The thing that made this an interesting game was that Riley Miller came up to bat with two men on and hit a home run, in the same inning Riley came up again with bases loaded and hit another one out, for a grand slam homer. Riley had seven RBI's in one inning, I have never heard of that before, not even in the majors. The Lady Cats played the Wayne Badgers last Wednesday and had a close win in the first game, but easily won the next two 25-9 and 25-15. Kalani Norris set a State career record with one of her kills. Kalani has put away 1,509 kills in her career, and the season is only half over. At the Cross country meet in Wayne, which was held at Fish Lake, at an elevation of 9200; both the boys and girls took 2nd; with Katie Rossier winning the girls race. The scenery is great but it was a really tough race with a very strong wind blowing and the elevation added to the difficulty.. The Panguitch junior varsity cross country team had a great meet at Fish Lake in Wayne County. Every member of the team contributed and crossed the finish line. For the boys, Ian Anderson came in 5th, followed by Larsen Perkin's taking 9th (sell his saddle), Next in was Dason Houston with 16th, followed by Issac Wedgewood in 17th and Hunter Hatch in 26th, Jantzen Orton in 31st. Cody Peterson in 39th and Jacob Fawson in 43rd. The girls were led by Chesney Campbell taking 15th and Harleigh Allen in 24th ; followed by Bailee Beckstead in 26th and Kali Stephenson taking 27th. Ashley Schow 28th and Ashlynn Dickenson took 35th. It was a great meet and we all had fun the food was good and the view was nice, see you next week.
