Show EverylCounts Change,Nour Aline Script 8 Be Durable'M 'Authentic H\14 4,41-144ey4 ZAw i I had a dream the other night and when I woke up the only things I remembered were the words durable and authentic. So, I wrote them down (I suggest that you have a pad and paper by your bed if you want to remember what you dreamt about. And, speaking from experience, make sure to write legibly so that you can read your "chicken scratch" the next morning). Anyway, a few thoughts come to mind when I think about the words durable and authentic. But first, let's look at a few definitions of durable from the online free dictionary where we learn that durable means "last; stable," and "capable of withstanding wear and tear or decay." And, one of the definitions of authentic can also be found online at Merriam-Webster Dictionary which states, "true to one's own personality, spirit, or character." I feel, in this world, to survive, we need to be both durable and authentic. When I was a leader over a young women's group in Washington State some of the young women were reared to be stable and able to withstand wear and tear no matter what life brought their way. They were also taught to be true to their own personality, spirit and character. These young women had brick house foundations. No matter what blew at them, they would not falter whether that was peer pressure or any kind of adversity. Even though they were still young, they knew who they were. I had some other young women who were not stable and not capable of withstanding wear and tear. They were also not true to their own personality, spirit or character. They were easily swayed by peer pressure and any kind of adversity nearly destroyed them. I think of one young woman in particular. I'll call her Leslie*. Leslie's parents didn't have a stable marriage and one parent wasn't true to his own personality, spirit and character even leaving his wife for another woman. Consequently, Leslie and her siblings chose different life courses to follow. One of Leslie's brothers got involved in drugs and promiscuity as a very young age. The others faltered in one way or another. No one else was stable, but Leslie. She was taught right, just like her siblings, but worked hard to remain stable and capable of withstanding a lot of wear and tear around her. She also remained true to her personality, spirit, and character. What she was lacking at home, she reached out to church leaders, relatives and even some school teachers. Some say it takes a community to raise a child, and in Leslie's case, this couldn't have been truer. Leslie ended up serving a mission for her church, attended and graduated from college, and married and had a family. She's done very well, even though her world growing up was unstable and lacked a solid foundation. I believe one of the reasons Leslie survived and was successful is because she created a different life script than the one she was raised in. If you weren't taught to be true to your own personality, spirit, or character, be true now. Remember, it was American self-help co-author, Jack Canfield, of the very successful Chicken Soup for the Soul series, who said, "So what?" when people would say things like, "My parent was an alcoholic," or, "I was abused," or, "My childhood was horrible," etc. His response to that kind of thinking? "So, what are you going to do about it?" That is my question for you. Will you continue going through your life blaming and telling people how horrible an upbringing or life you've had so far or will you change your life script like Leslie did? Be like Leslie. No matter what your foundation or role models or family history, change how you react to it and how you let it affect you. Only you can do it. But you have to make that decision today. No faltering. No wishy-washiness. No blame game, but forgive and pray for those who hurt you instead. Take responsibility for your choices, thoughts and words. Don't let your past or a label define or dictate who you are. You define who you want to be and what you want your life to look like. And as you do, ask yourself what Canfield suggests, "What if you...were to greet every interaction in your life with the question 'What's the potential opportunity that this is?' This one question can help you change your life script and make you more durable and authentic. *Name has been changed. A little research tells me antihistimines are the first line of allergy defense. They block the histamine production in the body. Too much equals allergy symptoms, sneezing, itchy eyes, throat and so forth. Best to take antihistimines before symptoms hit so they can do what they do—block. There are many good over-the-counter remedies. Ask your friendly druggiest. Try for less and be aware that some make you drowsy. A nasal spray could cause other problems, if taken more than three days in a row. A combination antihistimine and decongestion pill could be more than you need, especially if you treat before the really bad stuff starts. The advice is to pay attention to your body and environment. For instance, If you know cats affect you and take a pill in case you should meet one, try only taking them when you know you will, like when you visit someone who has a house cat. For a natural approach eat or drink foods like capers, apples, green tea, and many red-skinned fruits and grape juice, or take 200 to 500 mg one to three times daily of the good stuff found in these kinds of things. I take tamarack. I have been relatively free from allergies all winter, but that could end because of season change. I have had more energy, too. Many companies have isolated the good out of natural plants and home remedies and "peddle" them. It takes good sense not to fall for some of the schemes out there. Never sign up for a free bottle of pills or you will likely get it and then a bottle every month and your credit card charged. the Boneless Chicken The food in China can be a challenge for newcomers. One example is that chicken is often served "cleaver style," leaving the meat and bones chopped up together, making it difficult to eat. Years ago, I went with a group of newcomers to a nice hotel to eat some hamburgers and normal Western food. One lady in our group, Marie, wanted to eat chicken without needing to spit out the bones, so she ordered "boneless chicken." The waiter, whose English was quite good, could not imagine what Marie wanted. She was very insistent, saying, "I want boneless chicken. Chicken with no bones!" After more confusion and more insisting, the waiter finally said he understood, wrote something down, and returned to the kitchen. After about 15 minutes, our orders started coming out to the table. Marie's food was the last to arrive, and when the poor waiter placed her dish in front of her, we all laughed out loud. It was a plate of fried eggs. Carpet Store A young woman walked into a local carpet store. She'd just moved out of her parent's home and needed something for her new living-room floor. "Do you know how big the room is?" the clerk asked. "Yes," she said. "It's 22 flip-flops long by 18 flipflops wide ... and I wear a size 8." Space Mountain Looking for the Right Dress Our seven-year-old daughter was thrilled when we took her to Disney Shortly after the birth of their second World for the first time and she headed child, a husband offered to take his wife straight for Space Mountain. I worried shopping for a new dress. He endured more that the roller coaster would be too scary than two hours of listening to her complaints for her, but she insisted. Allergens exist yearround and some unlucky folks find themselves sneezing every season. If you have severe allergies that aren't relieved by medications, you may need shots, ultimately the most effective means of treating allergies. They work like vaccines, teaching your immune system to tolerate the allergens. The upshot? You don't have to sneeze your way through life. Although feeling better may require a few stabs at different treatments, you can outwit your rebellious body with effort and stick-to-itiveness.
