PAROWAN DENTAL ',Me BRYCE VALLEY SCHOOL NEWS 14 North Main St. Parowan, Utah ESCALANTE HERITAGE FESTIVAL SCHEDULED On May 29, 2010 the annual Escalante Heritage Festival will held in Escalante. The day's events will begin at the Escalante-Boulder Veterans' Memorial at 8:00 a.m. for a re-enactment of the first Fourth of July celebration by the pioneers after they entered the Valley in March of 1876. Wanting a flag to fly over their festivities, and American Flag couldn't be found, a Union Jack was offered by one of the pioneers who had migrated from England. But since it was the Centennial anniversary of the Declaration of Independence from England, no one wanted an English flag flying over their celebration. Finally an Indian Blanket with the colors red black and grey was run up the pole and served as the flag for the day. By the time they celebrated the 24th of July, a flag had been made by Mary Ann Schow. This re-enactment is an annual event. There will also be a program by the Escalante American Legion Post 114 to honor three individuals who have been members of the Post for over 20 years. They will then post a new flag and fire a 21 gun salute honoring all servicemen. Following the flag raising ceremony the Legion will retire several flags. This will be an impressive ceremony, and something that everyone should be interested in. After the ceremonies at the Veterans' Memorial, breakfast will be served at the Lions Club Pavilion in the City Park, by the Hole-in-the-Rock Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. It will be a delicious breakfast, so come and support your local chapter of the Sons of the Pioneers. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., at the Escalante High School commons area, there will be an arts and crafts show that will last until 4:00 p.m. People may come and go as they wish. At 10:00 a.m. there will be a video shown in the music room of the high school: "A Horseback Trip Up On the Fifty Mile Mountain." Come along with the friends as they leave Escalante and travel the Escalante Desert, the Bench, and then travel on horseback up the steep, narrow trail to the top of the Fifty Mile Mountain. See the country, spend time out on the range, and then see what it was like whiling away the evening hours inside the log cabin with the cowboys and their guests. The video will be shown again at 2:00 p.m. Following the "Horseback Trip Up On the Fifty Mile Mountain," There will be a presentation discussing the beginning, present and future of the Escalante Heritage Center. Drawings will be shown of an architectural rendering of the future building that is planned. Construction work on the first phase of this project bgan on April 26 and completion date is in late July. Also, in the music room there will be a quilt display that you won't want to miss. Since this year we are honoring Cowboys, the quilt display will be "Camp Quilts" that Cowboys carried on he range to keep them warm at night, and casual quilts that are used outside. This is a come and go display that can be seen between 11:30 a.m. and 2:p.m. During the noon hour you will be able to find delicious food an any of the fine eating establishments in the town as well as from the venders at the arts and crafts fair. At 2:00 p.m. the movie on the Fifty Mile Mountain will be shown again. Following the showing of the movie, visit with a couple of cowboys that drove cattle on the desert from the Hole-in-the Rock up the dangerous trails to the Fifty mile Mountain. Over the years 12 horses and a mule died on this precarious trail. The panel will be moderated by Cowboy Quinn Griffin. At 8:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium there will be a historical presentation called, The Storytellers." The setting for this interesting presentation is in a lonely cabin on the Fifty Mile Mountain. After the day's riding is done, the cowboys while away the evening hours telling stories to a magazine writer who has traveled to the area. The historical presentation was written by Quinn Griffin. In previous years tickets have been pre-sold and seats reserved, but this year there will be no pre-sale of tickets. Tickets can be purchased at the door. The suggested price of a ticket is $5, but since we are trying to raise money for a Heritage Center building, if you want to donate more, it will be appreciated. ...by Vicki D.
