GARFIELD TEACHERS COMPLETE LITERACY TRAININGS Recently some Garfield County School District educators have successfully completed, or are just concluding, intensive personal efforts to improve their classroom expertise in teaching reading to Garfield students. Nine Garfield County eductors just concluded a twoand-a-half year effort to complete classes for a Reading Endorsement. These nine successfully completed twentyone college credits from Southern Utah University. The District employees concluding the courses are Doneen Griffin from Escalante Elementary School, Lanae Cloud, Trista Rich and Kim Stewart from Bryce Valley Elementary, Joanne Savage, Lesa Taylor, Carol Orton, and Troy and Ann Marie Norris from Panguitch Elementary School. The reading endorsement classes were held in Panguitch and Tropic where as many as fifteen district employees took some or all of the courses. A total of eleven district employees received or completed Reading Endorsements requirements in these classes. In addition, five Panguitch Elementary staff members are in the final days of a rigorous course of literacy instruction. The course, Higher Steps, is designed to help educators' develop skills in teaching reading to older elementary students. It is a follow-up course to two earlier classes, Early Steps and Next Steps. Those completing the Higher Steps training are teachers Marilyn Marshall, Tracee Tebbs, Russell Torgersen and paraprofessionals Dyann Westwood and Carol Orton.
