When was the last time you used them? Work to increase your Christ like gifts. Step them up a notch. "Do unto others how you would want something done unto you." And just think. Winter Cold Stress: Wet Cold vs Dry Cold Kevin Heaton, USU Extension Agriculture Ago: VISITING SPECIALISTS FOR DECEMBER 2009 Dr. Robert Pearson or looks. Another young man possessed similar gifts. Also poor in regards to monetary wealth, you would never know it for he carried himself like a wealthy man. He wasn't pretentious, but confident. He also wore a beautiful smile, was Chris like and worked to remember your name. "Ms. Cynthia," is what he called me. He went out of his way to make sure he not only remembered your name, but what you liked. He was one of the most genuine people I have ever met. However, one more young man, a wealthier model looking one, didn't openly posses Christ like gifts. There was no smile, eye contact, kindness or beautiful spirit. He didn't carry himself confidently and appeared self-absorbed. Actually, if your eyes caught his, he looked away or down. But in all fairness to this young man, perhaps he was one of those not raised in a Christ like home. Perhaps he's working on his Christ like gifts, but they just haven't fully blossomed or are noticeable. Maybe, instead, he's writing letters, emails, texting or even Face booking kind messages to others. Possibly that's how he's starting to learn how to give Christ like gifts. And even, perchance, that's where he's most comfortable. This is actually, a great idea. Learn to give Christ like gifts where or how you feel most comfortable. Gain confidence from your successes, treating people right, then move up the ladder and perhaps outside of your comfort zone, to learn X NSION UPDATES 200 North 400 East • Panguitch, Utah 676-8811 www.garfieldmemorial.org Family Practice Dr. Richard Birch Dr. Todd Mooney Becky Roberts, FNP Tim Dennis, PA-C Dr. Mitchell Miller 2H Have you ever noticed another's Christ like gifts? Why do some seem to posses them and others don't? The good news is that if you weren't raised in a Christ like home, you can still acquire Christ like gifts. If you didn't learn them growing up, there is still time. Actually, there is always time. I've been out of the country for the last week and I've been observing Christ like gifts from all different nationalities. I'd like to share some of those gifts that I found. One came from a young man who might normally be overlooked because he was less affluent or because too many teeth had grown into his very small mouth in deformed ways. Yet, and a huge YET, he was beautiful. He's one of those people that you just gravitate to. That you want to be around because you feel good in his presence. He didn't care that his teeth were misaligned. Or, if he did, he didn't show it. Instead, he smiled unceasingly and before you knew it, you didn't even notice his teeth. He had already mastered one of the most important Christ like gifts: that life isn't about wealth or looks, including how imperfect or perfect teeth are, but how you treat people. Additionally, he had such an outgoing personality. He was extremely friendly, courteous, and respectful not to forget funny. This young man did not let his economic status or teeth get in the way of sharing his Christ like gifts. He was living life to its fullest through kindness, again, regardless of wealth Team Coach: Duties include working directly with students 13 - 17 years old. Must be a positive role model, interacting with students during evening and weekend recreational activities. All shifts available. Which ones' have become dormant? Which ones' do you need to step up a notch? Is it a smile? Is it remembering names? Is it providing service, visiting someone or inviting an individual or family over to dinner? Is it acknowledging someone and shaking their hand? Is it forgiving someone? Or sharing your talent or time with others? Or how about merely treating people with kindness and respect and being non judgmental? There are so many Christ like gifts to choose from. The perfect gift for cow owners, late or not, is the Cow-calf Management Guide and Cattle Producers Library. It only cost $125.00 and includes 250 fact sheets for cattle producers with topics such as quality assurance, nutrition, reproduction, range and pasture, animal health, management, marketing, finance, genetics, and natural disasters. Order it at this website: http://www.ays. uidaho.edu/wbrc/ or call 208-885-6345. Below is an example of the useful information that can be found in this book. Several factors create stress during the winter months including cold temperatures, wind, snow, rain and mud. Understanding how these factors influence livestock performance will help improve feeding management during stressful times and reduce stress caused problems. Of course, livestock producers know that their cattle need more feed at these times, but how much more? Wet condition's contribute to the stress associated with winter weather conditions, but is it significant? Table 1 shows critical temperatures for beef cattle. (adapted from Browsen, R. and Ames, D. Cattle Producer's Library. CL 760.) Note the significant difference in critical temperatures when the hair coat is wet. In regards to livestock performance, snow would be preferred to a cold rain. Rain wets the hair of the animal and all the air pockets (insulation) inside the hair are lost, increasing the critical temperature significantly. Table 1. Estimated Lower Critical Temperatures for Beef Cattle. Hair Coat Description Critical Temperature Summer Coat or Wet Coat 60 degrees F Dry Fall Coat 45 degrees F Dry Winter Coat 32 degrees F Dry Heavy Winter Coat 19 degrees F Keeping cattle dry is the preferred method of dealing with stress, but many times this is impractical. The next best way to deal with cold stress, is by increasing the energy in the diet. Table 2 gives an example of the effects of temperature on beef cattle energy needs (Adapted from Boyles, S and McCutcheon, J, Ohio State University Extension). Table 2. An Example of Effect of Temperature on Energy Needs of Beef Cattle. Effective Temperature Extra TDN Needed Extra Hay Needed (lbs/cow/day) Or Extra Grain Needed (lbs/cow/day) 50° F 0 0 30° F 0 0 10° F 20% 3.5-4 lbs 2-2.5 lbs -10°F 40% 7-8 lbs 4-6 lbs General Recommendations: 1. Provide shelter in the form of wind breaks or buildings to reduced wind, moisture and temperatures. 2. Adjust energy in rations to match expected performance for seasonal conditions. 3. Maintain livestock in a Body Condition Score of 5-7. 4. Research suggests that needs for protein, minerals, and vitamins are not altered by cold weather. 5. Keep the rumen full during stressful cold periods. There is significant amount of heat generated by the digestion process. Hungry cattle are stressed more than satiated cattle. |
