Show The Garfield County Insider November 5, 2009 IN OUR TOWN FYI PANGUITCH By: Mack Oetting Well as you heard last night, with all the sirens, the Lady Cats won the State Volleyball Championship. They beat Piute in the finals, just as I thought, (2523, 25-17, 25-22). This was Panguitch’s second title in three years. Piute had little trouble going through their bracket, winning all three matches fairly easily. Piute and Panguitch were by far the two best teams at State. This time unlike so many, many times that Panguitch met Rich, in the semi-finals (who has owned the Championship almost every year forever), it was all Panguitch, taking Rich in three straight sets. The Lady Cats did something I had not seen before; they had two games in a row where they didn’t miss a serve. The Cats did this as a true team effort, they really came together to get the job done, and didn’t have any weak spots. The Team as I understand, were 33 and 1, losing early in the season to a 4A team, they beat 2, 3, and 4A teams along the way. Kalani Norris was selected the Tournament MVP, she is outstanding and only a Junior and she can really spike it from the back row. Chelsie Barney who had 14 kills and the Libero, Shelby Taylor who is all over the court, whereever the ball is, are the only seniors on the team and will be really missed, the team should be a big favorite to repeat next year. I can’t say enough about Coaches AnnMarie and Troy Norris, they have been working with these girls since they were in the forth grade, well done Coaches. The Annual Panguitch Lions Club, 1A-2A All Star game will be held at the PHS gym. Only seniors are invited to the All Star game. The games are always exciting and is a fund raiser for the Volleyball team. This is your last chance to see the seniors play; Piute has a lot of great seniors as well as Panguitch and will be the heart of the 1A team. It will be held on Friday, November 13. If you are like my wife and daughter’s, the Annual Christmas Craft Fair is a highlight of the season. It is held at the Fair Building. Saturday November 14th. It starts at 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. As a fund raiser the 9th grade class will provide lunch. The Sub for Santa Committee will sell candy (so generously donated by the citizens of Panguitch) and provide a drawing for prize. There are many vendors and Mandy Soper makes this event a Holiday event you don’t want to miss.! UVU, girls and boys cross country team won a Conference Meet in New York. Two Panguitch runners Chase Englestead and Trac Norris finished 4th and 8th in the race. They will now go to a district meet in New Mexico and then if they do well there, it’s off to Nationals. Hooray for all Panguitch athlete’s you represent us well. Katie Rosser is running in the Nike Southwest Region race in Tempe Ariz. on Nov 21. Katie is our top cross country runner and is a sophomore. Can you top this? Paxton Cooper roping win in Arizona qualified him to compete in the Rodeo Nationals in Oklahoma City. Paxton who is 16 years old, took 2nd place and won $31,000. This is not a kid’s rodeo. Than, Paxton’s Dad was debating whether to take him back because of the cost, I think next time it will be a no brainer. Last year for Christmas, my wife Pat received a gift certificate in her name for two pigs that would be sent to a family in Africa. The two pigs were not to be eaten but to be raised, reproduce and help sustain a family. We all laughed. What can you give as a gift to someone that needs nothing? That was a great gift for Pat because she really needs nothing. Do you have people in your life on your Christmas list that needs nothing? Boy does the Quilt Festival Committee have a solution for you!!! This is how the idea all came about. Pat, Elaine and Claudia went to see a mock up statue for the Quilt Walk Park. Stan Johnson the sculpture lives in Parowan. We thought it quite a coincidence that the help for the 7-quilt walk pioneers came from Parowan also. Anyway, the statue design could not be better. Mr. Johnson caught the vision. The rough draft is pictured above. To get to the point, the statue committee is $15,000 short paying for the statue. This is where the 2 pigs come in. Do you have someone that you want to remember with a gift; how about a donation to help purchase a statue in their name? This could be Christmas, Birthday, Memorial, etc gift. To Grandparents send your children and grandchildren a little bit of history, let them participate. High School Graduation Classes how about a donation from your class? Businesses you have always supported the Quilt Walk festival Committee and hopefully the festival has helped you. Please put the statue on your donation list. The goal is to raise the money by April. The Quilt Walk Committee will design a donation card that you can send or give as a gift. It will contain a picture of the statue as well as the Quilt Walk Pioneer story. The donation cards will be available at the Sub-for Santa Candy booth during the Craft Fair on Nov 14. You may also contact Pat (2418), Elaine (2403) or Claudia (2525) for more details. Pat has a short memory, she has asked people to show their homes for the Sub for Santa Christmas Home Tour and she has forgotten who said “yes”. The Dastrup’s, Jorgerson’s and Veater’s(Chad) have already said yes! If you said yes and she hasn’t con- tacted you, please call her. It will be on Saturday December 5 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. She has shown almost every home in Panguitch. If she missed begging you and you would be so kind to show yours, please call her @ 676-2418 There is so much going on this next month get out your calendar and mark down the dates. Today I got old. All of the employees in the Garfield School District are giving up considerable compensation to help the District meet its obligations. Panguitch board member, Ted Chidester, told me he didn’t know what the District would have done if the Employee’s hadn’t agreed to these concessions. Little McKenzie Owens passed on last week. She is the Daughter of Bobby Owens and Pam Jensen. McKenzie was a special child who taught her mentors (Tammy Houston and her special aids) many things in their life; patience and love to name a few. McKenzie was a senior at PHS. Her Senior Class mates dug into their Class treasury and gave a sizeable donation to off set some of McKenzie’s expenses. I have trouble finding words to describe the students in Panguitch, they are so thoughtful and caring, God bless them. Keep up the good work. Mack O. At the beginning of every month a 4-H family or club is chose to be spotlighted for their involvement in 4-H. The Spotlight Award for November goes to the Daniel and Sarah Rose Family of Henrieville. The Rose family is very active in 4-H and takes advantage of the many opportunities 4-H has to offer. Daniel and Sarah are incredibly supportive 4-H parents. Also, Anthony (with the help of his families) organized the Fun Run during the Garfield County Fair. We appreciate the Rose family and their involvement in Garfield County 4-H youth program. When we asked Sarah what she likes most about the 4-H program two things came to mind first, “I love the 4-H model Learn by Doing” and second “4-H is meaningful leadership opportunities, not just leadership on paper its real leadership”. She was also quoted saying “4-H gives kids opportunities to explore things they might be interested in. I wish we could just get more kids in our area to realize 4-H is for all ages not just for elementary age kids”. Sarah is right 4-H is for everyone!
