Show Page 5 The Garfield County Insider July 23, 2009 IN OUR TOWN FYI PANGUITCH What a great summer this has been, there has been something going on almost all the time. Wasn’t the Fiddler’s concert wonderful? I’ve been to the Grand Ole Opre in Nashville and in my lowly opinion the fiddler’s are a lot more entertaining, course they don’t have to advertise after each song. This was the first time I have heard the Wabash Cannon Ball, where the train whistle was done by one of the singers, amazing. The Canyon Echo song sent chills down my back, it was so good. There were a number of young musicians with them. Two girls, Alina Gestison and Grace Dayton had just won the National Duo Fiddlers contest and Alina also won at the Utah contest. They played their duet and it was easy to see why they won, boy are they good! There was also a young man who played very well, it shows this great music will live on with a new generation of talent. There were about 250 people enjoying themselves on Friday night, both at the “A Taste of Panguitch” and at the Fiddler’s Concert. The Fiddler’s had breakfast with the Lion’s and then they were off to Cannonville for the Bear Festival. I hope all of eastern Garfield County got to hear them. There was also a half marathon, from Bryce Canyon to Tropic. This race gets bigger every year, with 1400 pre registered and probably 1800 to 2500 taking part in the race. This is a tough race on the body, it’s all down hill and if you run like I used to, on my heels in a jog, you pay the price however if you are a real runner, you will get your best time ever. Congratulation to all of the runners who finished, you are among an elite group. Tomorrow is the 24th, which starts at 7:30 with the By: Mack Oetting Scout’s breakfast, it will be on the Zions Bank lawn. At 10:00 am. It’s the big parade. Kids bring your candy bag and get ready. Maybe you might even get a little wet by the Fire Fighters. Panguitch 1st Ward has had one of their floats ready for a week now; we are one of the few local parades that still have floats in them. The Lions will have a 29 Model A pickup in the parade, this is the Lions 80th birthday, they were founded in 1929. The two members in the back of the Model A are Bob Smith and Glen Bauer, both are in their 80s. The Lion’s motto for the year is, “80 years old and still going strong”. The Lion’s over these 80 years have donated back into the community from the fund raisers over $200,000. Their latest endeavor is a $10,000 donation to the Hospital. We are through with our breakfasts for the year, but coming up on August 22 there will be the Demolition Derby, we have three cars that are ready and a lot of inquiries of interested. I would love to see some of the locals, pickup some of the prize money so get your tools out and get cranking. Caryl Englestead is still looking for a few more players for the Rhythm Band. You don’t have to be old, have musical ability or be a member of D.U.P., just want to have fun. Ardeth Davis tells me, she and her daughter, will be selling, “I love Panguitch” T-shirts in front of the Thrift Store, these shirts went fast at the Balloon fest, they have a large heart on them. Ardeth’s Kenney (fish eggs) Roe is looking for a 35 mm projector to show slides of Panguitch history at the senior center. Gosh it hasn’t been that long ago that was the only way to watch your pictures, I bet I have 2 or 3 thousand slides somewhere. Now you can put them on 2 or Miner’s 3 disks and watch them on TV. The Fire Fighters will have their famous deep pit barbecue and it will be at 12:30 at the fair building, come out, eat, and visit with friends. DeAnna Moore is starting up the “movie in the park” and it will start when it gets dark, these movies are great family fun. The 24th being on Friday should bring a lot of folks home for the holidays. Lynn and Tracy Armstrong took a trip back to Nauvoo for their 25th Anniversary. That is a long ride, after you leave the Rockies there nothing to see for a thousand miles till you reach the Mississippi River. I saw the two of them at Church this morning so I know they are alive, Lynn you are one tough lady! There is an old joke, “which is closer Nauvoo or the Sun, the Sun because I can see it”. Greg and Claudia Payne are on their way to Alaska for a cruise up the coast. This area has some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet of course next to Utah! Next month is the County Fair, I believe it starts on the 12th. The only thing that makes a fair any good is the Locals that participate. That is everyone through out the County, with all the hot houses in town there should be plenty of fresh veggies to show off, surely you can’t eat all that stuff. The talent show is always a hit, so get your crafts, quilts, art, photos, hobbies and show the world what great talent there is in Garfield County. It is always great to watch the kids with their prize animals. If you win you can go on to the State Fair where thousands will see your good works. Class of “55” - Root beer floats at Pat’s July 24th, Friday night @ 7:00 pm. Keep the good stuff coming. Mack O. ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR An absent-minded professor was on board a train and he was unable to find his ticket. The conductor said, “Take it easy. You’ll find it.” When the conductor returned, the professor still couldn’t find the ticket. The conductor said, “I’m sure you bought a ticket. Forget about it.” “You’re very kind,” the professor said, “but I must find it, otherwise I won’t know where to get off.” FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL This little girl comes home from her first day at school and says, “I’m never going to school again!” Her father asks why. She says, “The teacher said the 5+5 = 10. Then she said the 6+4 = 10, and 7+3 = 10 and 8+2 = 10 and 9+1 = 10.” The father asks, “What’s your point?” “She needs to make up her mind!” THE HIGHEST NUMBER One day Jimmy went up to his father and asked, “Daddy, what’s the highest number?” His father replied, “Well, I’m nut sure, but I think it’s in the Stimulus Package.” STATISTICS At his 103rd birthday party, my grandfather was asked if he planned to be around for his 104th. “I certainly do,” he replied. “Statistics show that very few people die between the ages of 103 and 104.” CUSTOMS INSPECTION After an overnight flight to meet my father at his latest military assignment, my mother wearily arrived at Rhein-Main Air Base in Germany with my eight siblings and me - all under age 11. Collecting our many suitcases, the ten of us entered the cramped customs area. A young customs official watched our entourage in disbelief, “Ma’am,” he said, “do all these children and this luggage belong to you?” “Yes, sir,” my mother said with a sigh. “They’re all mine.” The customs agent began his interrogation: “Ma’am, do you have any weapons, contraband or illegal drugs in your possession?” “Sir,” she calmly answered, “if I had any of those items, I would have used them by now.” The official allowed us to pass without opening a single suitcase. It Makes Sense...By Veda Hale I was visiting with Dee Wilson and her friend Sharon Yaple this week. I asked them for ideas that make sense. They had a good suggestion. It has do with using good sense when considering a new product. It makes sense that there are certainly natural plants out there in this wide world that could help one have better health. It makes sense that some explorer or traveler would notice that natives using the plant get a good benefit. So how does the discoverer bring this information back to a great number of people? How does anyone get a new idea or product accepted? I certainly don’t know all of the hoops one has to jump through, but have been around long enough to know that it is going to take money to figure out how to deliver it to the public so it is safe and still effective and can get the FDA approval, And then there is the “whoop-la” needed to sell it. It sure helps if someone like Ophra Winfrey talks about it on her Television show, and I like to feel that she doesn’t let anything on that she doesn’t have some good reasons for believing is worthwhile. (Oh, the power of a trusted big name!) Dee, Sharon and I agreed about that but then told ourselves and each other that it makes sense to question the marketers and the copy-cats who might lean on the name of something that has already been promoted. Is anything really ever free? Or nearly free? The big print promises it, but the little print? It makes sense to skip the big print and go right for the little print. If we find there that they will “make it easy” for us and send us a bottle of the “wonderful” stuff each month and charge our credit card automatically and we will be all set up to have this wonderful benefit, then run like heck. They are legal, after all it was all there in writing. But let’s face it, this kind of thing is a slick trick. Luckily, it isn’t the end of the world. One can call one’s credit card company and get it stopped, but the marketer usually gets away with one or two months of $35 or $40 for the product they send. This trick will run for a few more years until we wake up. Then it will likely be some other clever trick to catch us, we forget the old trick, and then it will circle back. Oil of Oregano, Acai berry, Noni juice, etc, etc., innocent, good natural plants who have been tooted to death. I suppose it makes sense to keep looking for good natural health suggestions, but to ask yourself whose making money and how. And for sure read the fine print on any promotion. A good health-food store might be a good place to go to try something with no strings attached. But if we really used good sense we would start early in life going with the simple fruits and vegetables, whole grains, little meat and fat and hardly any sweets (yeah, like only 65 grams of sugar a day Then we would likely find ourselves not inclined to go for some magic bullet. And, oh yes, we just might remain thin-ish. Send suggestions to Veda Hale, Box 956 Panguitch, Utah, 84759 |
