(435) 676-8111 SIDE LINES ....By Pat Dix COLOR COUNTRY STARS RUNNERS UP IN 12 AND UNDER “A” UTAH SOUTH CAL RIPKIN STATE The 11 team Cal Ripkin South “A’ Tournament got under way Tuesday, at the Panguitch Triplex, and the Color Country All Stars, comprised of players from Panguitch, Bryce Valley, and Piute, opened up with a bang, blowing out an over matched Carbon County team, 19 to 3. Tyce Barney, Mcrea Tebbs, and Landyn Brinkerhoff combined to toss a 3 run, 2 hit victory, fanning 7 and walking just 2. Hitting stars were numerous, with Tyce Barney leading all with a 3 for 4 day, and a pair of runs driven in. Rowdy Josie, and Slader Matthew each had a pair of RBIs, and lead off man Mcrae Tebbs racked up a 3 Ribby day. The only other Region 15, 1A area team, Wayne, ran into a red hot Roosevelt squad and were crushed 16 to 0. Later in the day, Duchesne eliminated the young Badgers in a much closer game. In Wednesday’s game with Juab, Color Country’s main color was black and blue, as Juab 10 runned them 13 to 3. A combination of 8 base on balls, 2 hit batters, and 2 errors, with only one hit, Tyce Barney’s 3 run home run, led to the Coloreds downfall. The second game of the day was a complete reversal, as Tyce Barney, Kaden Blood, and Mcrae Tebbs, combined to hold Duchesne to just 3 runs and 5 hits. At the plate the All Stars bats came alive with 16 runs on 15 hits. Zach Allen turned in a 4 for 5 day, including a triple, and 2 runs batted in. Tyce Barney’s pair of doubles and single were good for 4 RBIs, and Slader Matthew’s 4 singles in 5 trips added icing to the cake. The defensive gem of the game was turned in by Slader Matthew, on a smash down inside the right field foul line. Slader cut it off before it hit the fence and fired a bullet to second base to nail the hitter trying to stretch it into a double, for the initial out of the inning. Regretfully I cannot report any details about Color Country’s games with Helper and Roosevelt, on Thursday, as the schedule was moved up and I missed those games. I can report however that the All Stars defeateds Helper in the quarter finals, to move into the semis with Roosevelt. Against Roosevelt they were forced into extra innings before pulling out a 9 to 8 win, to qualify for the championship contest. with Juab Friday. Tyce Barney’s clutch home run, and the pitching of Kaden Blood in the final 2 innings, loomed large in the victory. The Championship game Friday, got off on a sour note, as an error, a 2 base hit, and a home run, put Color Country in a 4 to 0 hole early. They fought back to narrow the margin to 7 to 5 in the fifth inning, but Juab blew it open with 4 runs in the sixth, to claim the crown and a trip to California. To put this entire tournament in to perpective, the kids of Color Country were up against teams from larger communities and areas with larger player pools. The only 1A area reps were themselves and Wayne. This is not intended as an excuse but only to give credit to a group of youngsters who played well and battled down to the wire throuhghout the tourney. They did themselves, their family, their fans, and their communities, credit. From the “Sidelines” a very sincere WELL DONE!!!! HOMECOMING RODEO SPONSORS THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
