Show The Garfield County Insider Page 4 April 23, 2009 IN OUR TOWN... Explore Escalante jana@exploreescalante.com Escalante continues to get lots of publicity about our Grand Staircase. I’ve been working with some of the local businesses to create one-page web sites to use as grabbers and then link to various Escalante Businesses. I’ve been using pull quotes from various articles published about the area over the years. As I get them done I’ll share them, the list of articles is pretty impressive. Are you ready for some summer reading? Summer? Winter just quit (I hope). There’s only a month of school left and the longest day of the year is only 60 days away, so get ready. You might pick up a book a month (remember the old club?) and be prepared to loll the summer days away (after you’re done canning, gardening, making repairs to the house, barn and fences, getting the kids school clothes made and planning your Christmas gifts). Printed material s are on a downward slope straight to the e-screen versions of newspapers, magazines and books. Amazon has a book reader you can buy and download books to read. Its call the Kindle. Somehow it’s just not the same as curling up with a good book. Until they completely go away, here’s a few you might consider: “Animals Make Us Human”, by Temple Gradin and Catherine Johnson, the second non-fiction about a pets right to a “decent life” and “a painless death”. For politicos, “The Rules of the Game”, by Leonard Downie Jr. will keep you on the edge of your chair. Using his 17 years with the Washington Post, Downie uses the material for a different twist. Don’t forget, its fiction. Lastly, if you like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Architectural skills you’ll be intrigued by “The Women”, written by TC Boyle. You’ll learn of the other side of this complicated man. The story is about love, not architecture. Garfield County School Board met at Escalante High last week. I attended the work session and found new members asking hard questions focused on educating our children. Make no mistake, there are five strong-minded Board members with their own sets of priorities. But with this board, it’s not about who will win or lose, it’s about how they work together. So far it’s lookin’ good. There’s a budget work session scheduled for May 6th at Bruce Valley High School. Check the district’s website for confirmation of the date, place and time. My thanks to Supt. Parks for making sure the agendas are posted to the state website, http://www.utah.gov/ pmn/index.html. If you’re interested in the board meetings and their content, you can sign up to get agendas e-mailed to you from that site. Now if we could get Garfield County to post theirs the miles between us would be fewer. A correction to last weeks wedding dates are Cam Twitchell is on the 8th of May and Jaycee Cox is on the 9th of May. I just turned them around. Sorry folks. Speakers in church today were Abbagail Harman who did and excellent job and she did not read a word she gave us her talk. Edourdo Montoya talked about faith and how it is important in our lives and he gave a very touching testimony. Following him, Alexis Tebbs, and Anne Marie Barton played a violin number that was beautifully done. We have such talented young people in the Bryce Area. David Tebbs gave the closing remarks and he touched our hearts with his humbleness. In Cannonville Joseph Harman and Rick Bybee talked and did an excellent job. In Henrieville today they received a new Bishopric. Coming into the new Bishopric is Jeff Johnson as Bishop, Dale Pollock as first counselor, Ralph Chynoweth as 2nd counselor and Frankie Moore as Executive Secretary. We congratulate these men and wish them luck in their new callings. Released with a huge expression of appreciation were Shawn Chynoweth as Bishop, Les Barker as first counselor, Cliff Mathews as second counselor and Frankie Moore as Executive Secretary. However Frankie got put right back in again. There were many visitors in attendance supporting these folks today. Sandy Johnson’s sister, Tanna Mosalsky and her two children, Bradley and Ellie, traveled down from Washington State to go backpacking to Coyote Gulch with their brothers, Richard and Karl Lifferth and with family and friends. The weather wasn’t very cooperative but they still had some fun and exciting adventures. The Stewart Dance Academy is holding their fourth Annual dance recital on Friday the 24th at 6:00 P.M. at the Bryce Valley High School Auditorium. Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend. They really enjoy performing and have worked hard to put on this show. They usually have a season of eight months to prepare, but this year they only had four months. The students are dedicated and the parents are a great support. Break a leg dancers!! Bill and Sheri Scoffield presented a Fireside for the Youth of the Escalante Stake in the Tropic Church House. They encouraged the young men and young women to be more Christlike and to be good followers of Him. It was a very wonderful meeting. Charlie and Eva Dean Francisco had a huge housefull over the Easter Weekend. Friends from Salt Lake came down to spend some time with them. Roger and Kelly Sellers and their son came from Salt Lake, Sam and Marley and their three year old daughter, Madeline, also came, then William Mortensen came to visit his grandparents, the Francisco’s. All from the Salt Lake area. Coming on Thursday was Sharon and Robyn Griffin of Monroe to help Charlie prepare his goats for the freezer. Their son Shane also joined them. Everyone partied and had a good visit. The Francisco’s were tired and happy on Monday morning as they watched the tail-lights of the cars as they all headed back up north on their way to Salt Lake. The Francisco’s received a surprise phone call this past week when a man named Rex called and asked if it was okay if he came and stayed for a day or two to visit with them. He came from Boulder where he worked in the Outdoor Survival School as an instructor and he used to bring students over to Francisco’s to help in the green house. He also took back with him some trees to grow in Boulder. Rex wrote a song about the Francisco’s and he also asked permission to put them in his book. They were quite pleased with the visit and the song. They are delighted to think some of their trees are growing in Boulder Utah. Two Bridal showers were held this past week for Eliza Cooper in Panguitch and Jaycee Cox in Tropic. They are both getting married and having their wedding receptions one day apart. May 8th and 9th. The showers were a lot of fun and the girls are very excited. Eliza is marrying Cam Twitchell and Jaycee is marrying Austin Mortensen of Beaver. Jaycee’s sister-in-law, Phryne Cox, will graduate from SUU the day after Jaycee’s wedding. She is the wife of Josh Cox, Jaycee’s brother. They all brought their families with them and all missed T.J. and Shiela Johnson who had a sick child and Bryce and Cherish Syrett who had Baseball camp. Everyone had a wonderful time and it was all put on video. Entertaining the group were Connor Chynoweth who played his guitar, Kodi Stevens who sang, Alexis Tebbs who played her guitar while all of the granddaughters sang, and Shelby Thorn sang. One of the highlights of the time together was when VerJean Clark, Kathern Syrett, and Renon Gibson donned costumes and lip synced to Abba’s songs from “Mamma Mia” the big broadway show. They were gone five days and had no wind and nice weather except for a hail storm. This is an annual event for the families. Hope everyone has a great week and maybe someone out there knows the secret to slow time down. I cannot believe it is almost May already. Gracious. Please call with your news or email me. Thanks VS |
