December 31, 2008 The Pastor’s Ass Santa’s Reindeer According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year (which are the only members of the deer family, Cervidae, to have females do so). Male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer, every single one of them, from Rudolf to Blitzen........ had to be a female. We should have known this when they were able to find their way. Advertise in the Insider Call 676-2621 It Makes Sense...By Veda Hale This year has been a disaster for many retail stores. More bad news is expected. We, as consumers, are even being encouraged to keep spending, that if we don’t, dire consequences loom ahead. Fine. We’d like to fix things by being a good, faithful consumer. “Give us the money or the way to make the money”, we will likely say, and “we will be glad to be your happy consumer needed to save the economy.” I don’t know how this crisis will end, but I do think that whatever happens a new buying trend is here. That is to shop on the web. Actually, there is good reason to do so. Often prices are better, a middleman is eliminated, safety is now high. Selection and speed of delivery are good. Here are a few suggestions to make your experience successful: 1. Use a credit card, not a debit card. This way you can limit your risks, as most credit cards have a limit of $50 loss. For added safety, you can even use a credit card that has a rather low limit, if someone did try to rip you off, they couldn’t get much. Use only one card for net purchases to help you keep a good record. Better still, use a place like Pay Pal which covers $1100 of fraud loss. 2. Save receipts and email confirmations, in case you need to return item. 3. Deal with reputable companies. One way to know that is to call the numbers provided in the web site and quiz them until you feel sure. But another way is to just never order from a company which has numbers at the beginning of their URL, such as http:1/66.1027.104@654.@65.514 56%66A. In our small towns, shopping on the net is often the only way to get an item without traveling some distance. However, if we don’t support our few local sources for goods, then we will lose them and the jobs they provide. Think when you order from net if the shipping costs add up to nearly as much or even more than a local source would sell the item for. Keeping taxes in our area is also a thing to think about. Fill up your car with gas locally before going on a trip, is a small way to help. Times are a changing, that’s for sure. We might yet be thrown together as small communities to solve our own problems. Some of us remember how, during the depression, local script was used to trade locally. I hope that doesn’t come back, but it is still a good idea to keep as much of our business close to home. The pastor was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the race again, and it won again. The local paper read: PASTOR’S ASS OUT FRONT. The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the pastor not to enter the donkey in another race. The next day, the local paper headline read: BISHOP SCRATCHES PASTOR’S ASS. This was too much for the bishop, so he ordered the pastor to get rid of the donkey. The pastor decided to give it to a nun in a nearby convent. The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the next day: NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN. The bishop fainted. He informed the nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey, so she sold it to a farmer for $10. The next day the paper read: NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10. This was too much for the bishop, so he ordered the nun to buy back the donkey and lead it to the plains where it could run wild.. The next day the headlines read: NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE. The bishop was buried the next day. The moral of the story is . . . being concerned about public opinion can bring you much grief and misery. Even shorten your life… So be yourself and enjoy life. Stop worrying about everyone else’s ass and you’ll be a lot happier and live longer! WATCH YOUR MOUTH! Times change. Customs change. It happens through the ages. An offhand remark that was O.K. once now might seem outrageous. It’s out of fashion nowadays to extend a casual greeting. Some folks take offense so bad they might give you a beating. You gotta do some good research before you mouth a platitude. Pleasant ain’t what pleasant says if the other guy’s got an attitude. Say we meet on Easter morning. You might not think it’s funny, If I say “Happy Easter,” and you objurgate the bunny. Like, I might get a dirty look. Even a thorough cursin’, If I say “Merry Christmas” to a ‘Happy Holidays” person. It’s no big deal, way deep down, and I don’t want to be too critical, And I don’t think the holidays are at fault. I think it’s, like, political.
