However, winter can also be a very dangerous time of year for drivers. If you plan on traveling this winter, it pays to prepare your vehicle for winter driving, including having winter supplies available in your vehicle. It also pays to follow simple safe driving tips and to be a cautious driver. Reliable transportation is especially important in the winter. You can keep your vehicle in top operating condition by winterizing your car. This includes checking: • Ignition system • Fuel system • Belts • Fluid levels • Brakes • Exhaust system • Wiper blades and windshield washer fluid • Snow tires • Tire tread and pressure • Defroster • Proper grade oil • Cooling system • Battery • Lights • Antifreeze Always keep your gas tank full as this will minimize condensation and provide maximum advantage in case of trouble. In addition, make sure you clear all windows and lights of frost and snow, drive with your headlights on and keep winter supplies in your car. Winter car supplies include a scraper and brush, small shovel, jumper cables, tow chain, and a bag of sand or cat litter for traction. Also include road flares, blankets, and a flash- light with batteries. Be sure to include extra items of clothing such as mittens or hats, and some non-perishable food for nourishment if stranded. It is best to be prepared for the worst, but you can also prevent the worst by driving safely. When driving this winter, follow these safety tips: • Clear snow and ice from your vehicle before driving • Leave plenty of room in front of you for stopping • Know the current road conditions • Use brakes cautiously – brake early and correctly • Don’t use the cruise control in your vehicle in wintry conditions • Slow down and remember to wear your seat belt If you do get stranded, there are several things to do to remain safe. If you have access to a telephone, you can call for help. Be sure to stay in your vehicle, only running the engine at 10 minute intervals for heat. Keep fresh air in the vehicle to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, which might happen if the exhaust system is blocked by snow or ice. If you get into a crash, check first to see if someone is injured. If necessary, call 911 for help. If possible, move your vehicle off the road. Exchange information with the other driver – include name, address, driver’s license number, vehicle registration, and insurance information. Driving safely could ensure that you enjoy a safe holiday season, and could ensure the safety of others on the road as well. siDE lines BOBCATS WIN THEIR REGION OPENER Saturday’s win over Bryce Valley was a case of balanced scoring as Panguitch tallied four in double figures. Trac Norris had the hot hand, pouring in 30 points, while Eric Frandsen had 16 and 10 rebounds, Brooks Leach 14 and 2 blocks, Trevor Peterson 10 with 4 steals, and Bryce Taylor with 9 and 10 assists. In the first half the Cats shot 82% from the floor, and had 77% for the entire game. For the Mustangs, Kaden Pollock was high with 17, followed by Dusty Ahlstrom 15, Korde Chynoweth 7, and Tallen Chynoweth 7. In the 3 point parade, Norris had 2 for the Bobcats, Korde Chynoweth and Cache Mortensen 1 each for the Mustangs. Final score--Panguitch 90 Bryce Valley 62. MOQUIS SCALP TIGERS With 2008 MVP Tim Hughes leading the charge with 25 points, the Escalante Moquis barely broke a sweat in their 63 to 45 win over Milford, at Milford. Kevin Griffin rang up 13 points and Kam Roundy 11, as the Moquis improved to 4 and 0 overall. In non Region action, Tim Hughes poured in 6 three pointers and 26 points, as the Escalante Moquis overpowered North Sanpete 65-32 in the final 3 quarters, coasting to an 81 to 52 victory in Richfield. Joining Tim in the 3 point barrage, were Logan McLemore, Kam Roundy, Kace Roundy, and Taylor, for a total of 10 from long range. Mc Lemore chalked up 17 points and Brady Barney 11, as the Moquis improved 5-0 for the season. ....By Pat Dix LADY MUSTANGS REMAIN UNDEFEATED Friday, the Panguitch Lady Bobcats played host to the high scoring Bryce Valley Lady Mustangs in a game that was much closer and more hotly contested than the score would indicate. The Mustangs got off to an early lead and the prospects were for a “blowout,” but the Bobcats turned up the heat in quarter number two, and trailed by just one point at intermission. At the end of three quarters of play the Panguitch slowing of play had put the Cats ahead 28-25, but costly turnovers and missed shots in the final 8 minutes resulted in Bryce Valleys 11th win of the season, 38 to 30. The Bobcat’s Kalani Norris led all scorers with 13 while Deysha Twitchell and Kaitlan Polock had 9 points each for the Mustangs. LADY MUSTANGS OPEN REGION ONWINNING NOTE Kaitlan Pollock racked up 19 points as the Bryce Valley Lady Mustangs opened the Region 15 wars with an impressive 50 to 33 win over Valley, at Tropic. Deysha Twitchell was the only other Mustang in double digits, with 14, as the Bryce Valley defense allowed only three Valley players to break into the scoring column. The Lady Mustangs are now 1-0 in Region and 10-0 overall. LADY BOBCATS DOWN EL CAPITAN Wednesdays contest, at El Capitan, saw the Panguitch Lady Bobcats return to their defensive mode as they held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the second stanza, and outscoring them 20 to 8 from the field, to chalk up a 44 to 23 victory. Complementing a strong defense was a balanced scoring attack with Kalani Norris in the lead with 14, Brianne Bateman 12, Chelsie Barney 10, Bobbie Burningham 3, and Shelby Taylor 3. The Lady Cats are now 6 and 0 on the season. MUSTANGS CLOBBER WOLVES Despite being outscored in the first and third quarters, the Bryce Valley Mustangs put it all together in the 2nd and 4th to pull out their second win of the season 59 to 52 over the North Sevier Wolves. Dusty Ahlstrom’s 21 points was high for the game and J.J. Dunham and Cache Mortensen racked up 16 each. Cache also hit one from beyond the arc. BRYCE VALLEY BOYS FALL TO VALLEY The Region 15 opener for the Mustangs at home, Thursday, was a bit disappointing for the Bryce Valley Faithful. Two disastrous quarters that suffered from a scoring drought sent the Mustangs to a 71 to 37 defeat. Cache Mortensen and Kaden Pollock led with 10 points each, while Dusty Ahlstrom and J.J. Dunham chipped in with 6 each. |
