Show Page 13 UTAH EXECUTIVES HEADED INTO 2007 WITH RENEWED OPTIMISM Utah business leaders headed into 2007 with both renewed optimism and realistic expectations, according to the latest results from Zions Bank's Utah Quarterly Economic Forecast, conducted by independent research firm Dan Jones & Associates. The Utah Quarterly Economic Forecast tracks trends in the local marketplace and gauges the health of Utah's economy from the perspective of high-level executives throughout the state. The fourth quarter 2006 survey of business leaders was conducted January 25 through February 2, 2007. Responding panelists showed they had regained optimism in the financial future of their companies following a cautiously optimistic third quarter. Based on profits and tosses over the past three months, 32 percent pf business leaders rated their level of optimism a 9 or 10 on a scale of 1 to 10 (very pessimistic to very optimistic). Shifting from sentiment in the third quarter, Utah business leaders anticipate spending more on capital expenditures in the upcoming quarter than they had in the previous quarter. In addition, Utah business leaders were more likely to say that their companies will increase their workforces in the upcoming quarter rather than maintain status quo or decrease staff. "Interestingly, while a significant number of executives are predicting an increase in their workforce, they are increasingly concerned about finding qualified employees in Utah's tight labor market," said Pat Jones, co-owner of Dan Jones & Associates. Following are additional highlights from the fourth quarter 2006 Zions Bank Utah Quarterly Economic Forecast: • Just under half of the executives (49 percent, down from 51 percent in the third quarter) predict that their company's economic health will be better in the next three months than it was in the prior three-month period. But, the percentage who believes their company's economic health will be "much better" decreased from 17 percent in the third quarter and 16 percent in the second quarter to 14 percent in the fourth quarter. • One-third of the panelists (34 percent) indicate they will spend more on capital expenditures in the coming three months than they had during the past quarter. This is up from 25 percent in the third quarter and 30 percent in the second quarter. • Nearly half of the panelists (46 percent, up from 40 percent in the third quarter) anticipate that their company's workforce will increase in the next quarter. • Finding qualified employees, health insurance costs for employees, and keeping qualified employees are the isEXIT RED ROCK REALTY sues of greatest concern for executives.
