REVAMPED WEBSITE PROVIDES PARENTS WITH CONCRETE HELP TO PREVENT UNDERAGE DRINKING Eating dinner as a family three or more times a week can be a powerful deterrence in preventing teens from drinking, says a new report from The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. This report, sponsored by TV Land and Nick at Nite's Family Table, is featured on ParentsEmpowered.org's revamped website, found at www.parentsempowercd.org. The new site is rich with skills and risk assessment guidelines for Utah parents; a monthly feature article; tips and tools; downloads of brochures, fact sheets and teaching tools; and news, including the Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking (this report lists six call-to-action goals at www.surgeongcneral.gov/topics/ underagedrinking/goals). The ParentsEmpowered.org site also alerts parents to events on underage drinking prevention around the state. How about text messaging your child? A ready way to get in touch with your child while sitting at your desk is accessible directly from the site. Research shows that just keeping in touch with your child is a powerful deterrent to drinking. With a simple point and click selection, you can send a text message like these: • JUST THINKING ABOUT YOU. YOU'RE A GREAT KID. LOTS OF LOVE. • FACT: UNDERAGE DRINKING CAUSES BRAIN DAMAGE. FACT: WE ALL LOVE YOUR BRAIN AS IT IS. • HEY, WHAT'S UP? GIVE ME A CALL WHEN YOU GET A MINUTE. • LOOK WHO'S TEXT MESSAGING! JUST WANTED TO SAY HI. I LOVE YOU. Other suggestions from ParentsEmpowered.org: First, learn and explain how alcohol can damage your child's brain and increase the risk of addiction. Research shows parental disapproval of under* age drinking is the #1 reason your child will choose not to drink. (SAMHSA, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2005) Next, apply these three research-proven skills that prevent underage drinking (details can be found at www.parentsempowered.org): 1. Bonding; 2. Boundaries; 3. Monitoring ParentsEmpowered.org is a statewide campaign focused on eliminating underage drinking in Utah. Its primary goals are to educate parents about the dangers of underage drinking and provide them with proven skills to communicate with their children about remaining alcohol-free. This campaign runs through June 2007. More information is available at www.parentsempowered.org. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com Congratulations to Tim and Chrishel Leach on the birth of a beautiful little daughter named Grace Elaine. She was born on March 27th in Idaho and weighed 8 lbs. and 3 ozs. She had some trouble when she was born and was not breathing well due to some complications. Grace is still in the hospital under a doctors care and hopefully will get to go home very soon. Rod and Kathern Syrett of Bryce are the grandparents and they have been in Idaho with the Leech family helping out. Grandmother Elaine Haas is going up to take her turn this week. Baby Grace will join a sister and a brother at home who are anxious to have her be there. Helma Haas, Mary Etta Chynoweth and Jean Syrett are the great - grandmothers. We will keep you in our prayers little Grace and hope you are soon home with your family. Congratulations to Derrick and Laura Pollock on the birth of their adorable little son, Shaylee Ray Pollock. He was born on March 23rd and has two siblings as home to welcome him. Stetson and Oakley are looking forward to having a little brother. Grandparents in Tropic are David and Kathryn Pollock. The In-Step Dance Company held their review last week and it was very nice. The dancers ranged in age from Pre-school to 8th grade with special dances by Jacqui Talbot and Alyssa Johnson and Jessica Stewart, Mindy Gramshaw, and Malory Clarke. It was fun watching those very young dancers get such a kick out of what they were doing and knowing they were so proud. Megan Brinkerhoff did a great job with them and they should all have been very proud. The pre-school dancers were Casia Brinkerhoff and Maycee Brinkerhoff. K-2nd grade dancers were Morgan Syrett, Makenna Syrett, Alycia Flores, Ambree Flores, Taylee Niemann, Alexis Niemann, Dakota Stevans, Tyrah Tebbs, Emilee Courtright, and Britnee Littlefield. 3rd - 5th grade dancers were Annie Syrett, Michelle Syrett, Ashlyn Dickensen, Harlee Monroe, Kallie Bybee, and Taylr Stevens. 6th - 8th graders were Alexis Tebbs, Kara Page, Darrian Mathews, Makelle Pollock, Janette Pollock, and Sandy Leslie. Congratulations girls on a job well done. We really enjoyed the show. Our son, Mike Jensen bought us tickets to the "Nashville Tribute to Joseph Smith the Prophet" at Tuachaun so we went down. Other than being chilly it was a beautiful night and the show was awesome. We thoroughly enjoyed the time and the talents. We ran into Helen Willis andjier daughter Carla Ramsay. Carla's daughter Triessa and daughterin-law, Kiva were with her along with three teaching partners of Triessa's. They all teach at Canyon View Middle School. We also saw Shawn and Karen Bybee of Enoch, Dennis and Brenda (Ramsay) Shakespear of Kanab with their son Beau and his friend, Jeremy, Laycee Johnson with her husband Ryan's grandmother Afton Taylor of Cedar City and one of Layne Le Fevre's brothers, we thought his name was Lyle but someone said that it was Loren so we are sorry for the mistake in his name. It was a great show. Shawn Bybee is the son of Clive and Thelma Bybee, Dennis Shakespear is the son of Lylian Le Fevre and the late Olaf Shakespear, and Brenda is the daughter of Clare and Mary Lee Ramsay. It was a great night and it was fun see-ing everyone there. We all shivered together. It was worth every minute of it. Hope everyone has a wonderful Easter weekend and will give us a call with your news.
