Afton was born on March 21, 1920 to Samuel aiufl-mily Davis Pollock. He attended Tropic High School and as a youth in Tropic he loved herding sheep. Music was a very important part ol the sheep camps. I le went to the Hast Central Slates on an LDS Mission in 1941 and to the Pliillipincs with his wile. Dell Rae. in 1°X\ He enjoyed both missions. Alton enlisted in the Airforce in May of 1943. He left for overseas duty in 1944 where her served in the China-BurmaIndia Theater. His duties were a Tail Gunner on a B-25 and he flew 73 combat missions, lie was the Aerial Photographer Gunner. On his 73rd mission he had to bail out over Burma. He was honorably discharged on November 23, 1945. He married his sweetheart, Dell Rae Campbell in 1946. The dress she wore was made from the fabric of the parachute that Afton had used when he bailed out over Burma. His educational achievements included Airplane Armorer/Aerial Gunnery on November 23, 1943, a High School Diploma from Tropic High School on May 22, 1950, a Bachelor's of Science in Industrial Education from Utah State Agricultural College on June 195 1 and he received his Administrative Certificate from BYU in 1969. lie taught at Tropic High School from 1951-1953. The school burned down later. He taught Jr. High School in Hawthorne Nevada from 1954-1958, and finally spent 1959-1982 at Bryce Valley High School. He was the Principal at BVHS for some years before retiring. Afton has many hobbies that he enjoys doing. Working on his Life History, livestock work, gardening, attending High School athletic events, Dutch Oven Cooking(yum), the Utah Jazz, and spending time with his family. Afton says his greatest passion is" "Being the best father, husband, and grandfather that He can. He loves supporting the youth in Bryce Valley and has always enjoyed the sports events. His life goals are: wanting to complete his life history, collecting and completing the history of his ancestors, and working on his genealogy. He also enjoys his family very much. There were some great individual efforts by these young men, and we appreciate their hard work! Placing from liscalanle High School were Nick Carri/osa. 3rd; and Keaton Durfey at 4th at 119 lbs, Ronald Lefevre placed 4th at 135, Tyson Torgerson placed 2nd at 152, and Pete Christensen placed 4th at 189. Placng from Panguitch High School were Cree Carter. 3rd; and Caleb llolman at 4th at 112 lbs. Brady Owens, 2nd at 125; Gavin Smith, 2nd at 130; Andrew Sawyer, 4th at 145; Conner Mooney, 2nd at 152; Zach Holm, 3rd; and Steven Lee. 4th at 160; Geoffrey Reynolds 2nd, at 171; Russell Moore, 2nd at 1X9, Colby Owens. 3rd at 215; and Colby Julander 3rd. and Andy Barney, 4th at 285. It will be held over Presidents" Day Weekend. Feb. 17. IS and ! ° , at Ruby's Inn. located just outside Bryce Canyon National Park on Highway 63. What started as a small cross country ski race by Ciarficld County Travel Council over two decades ago has grown into a three-day festival of fun for the entire family. FRI:E clinics, tours and demos will he held throughout the weekend at Ruby's Inn including yoga, archery, kayaking clinics, cross country ski and snowshoe lours, photography, crafts for kids, and more. 'I here are plenty of activities for everyone in the family. Bryce Canyon National Park will conduct interpretive tours and special programs including a star party on Sunday evening. Richard Jones, the first American to row a boat nearly 4,000 miles across the entire width of the Atlantic Ocean, will talk about his journey on Saturday evening. "Most of the activities are free," says Jean Seiler of Ruby's Inn, "which makes the festival especially appealing and economical for families with children. There is something for everyone all weekend." The archer)' biathlon and the cross country ski races are the only events with entry fees. Participants of the competitions receive a long sleeve t-shirt for the $ 10 per race entry fee. The archery biathlon will be held on Sunday, Feb.
