Arthur Cooper the other day. He shared with me a letter he received from the State Historic Preservation Officer. This letter said that Panguitch was nominated by the Utah Board of State History and the Utah State Historic Preservation Officer, and was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Services on November 16,2006. This is exciting news for Panguitch. The listing in the National Register provides recognition of Panguitch's significance. There are some* major benefits to this listing. One is availability of tax credits for qualified restoration work and also, other financial incentives that will hopefully encourage the restoration and preservation of our historic buildings. What an opportunity we have to make our town more inviting to people passing through. We have some wonderful historic buildings not just on Main Street, but throughout the whole town. If you need more information on this opportunity, please attend one of the city council meetings that are held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, or contact Panguitch Main Street at 676-2514. We thank everyone who worked so hard to get Panguitch on the National Register. Great work, we really appreciate all you have done. The Southwest Regional Health Department will be at the Tropic Town office and fire Station on January 24 at 6pm to explain the role of CERT volunteers in case of a Pandemic outbreak in our area. At the same meeting we are forming a Medical Reserve Corps for Garfield County. Anyone with nurses training, EMT training or other medically related fields is invited to come and hear the details of how Medical Reserve Corps assists our hospital and professional staff during a medical incident that overwhelms the community. Pandemic conditions can be a major disaster without the extra help of trained volunteers. Come and hear what you can do. This meeting is also our monthly refreshed training for all CERT members in the County. There are a number of ways in which Utah hospitals are supporting consumerdriven health care, the most recent of which is by providing easy public access to current and valid hospital information. This year Utah Hospitals and Health Systems Association (UHA) partnered with the Wisconsin Hospital Association to produce the Utah PricePoint System, a consumer-friendly database of hospital charges and utilization statistics. We have also developed a data system for hospital quality and safety. UHA member hospitals and health systems feel strongly that understanding how to use this information is just as important as knowing how to access the data. For instance, in most cases, out-of-pocket hospital costs for privately insured patients are determined by their health insurance policies, which have negotiated specific discounts with a hospital or health system. The bill does not reflect the actual hospital costs. However, a growing number of Utah residents are being covered by socalled consumer-directed health plans, under which the billed charge may factor into the amount that a patient would pay for a specific procedure at the hospital. In order to accurately compare charges from hospital A with hospital B, the consumer needs to understand what the data reflects. The Utah PricePoint System achieves both access and education. The Utah PricePoint System provides: Aggregate payment information for each hospital for the three major kinds of health care coverage - private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid. This information allows users to understand how hospitals' charges compare to the amount of revenue they actually collect for services provided to the three patient categories. Hospital charge information for all Utah hospitals, all services, and the average length of stay. Publicly reported hospital charge, quality and safety data may not answer every question, but it should - at a minimum - provide a good and factual starting point for more informed discussion between consumers and insurers or consumers and providers of care.
