The goal of the Bryce Canyon Christmas Bird Count is to count as many birds as possible within a 15-mile diameter circle that includes most of Bryce Canyon National Park, the Dixie National Forest near Tropic Reservoir, and the communities of Tropic, Cannonville and Ruby's Inn. Volunteers must sign up in advance to get assignments and data sheets. They can volunteer to count birds on their favorite trail, along roads, or in their backyard or neighborhood. People of all experience levels are welcome. Count organizers will try to pair experienced birders with beginners. Participants should meet at Ruby's Inn at 8 am on Dec. 16. Organizers will distribute data entry sheets and maps of the count circle. Bryce Canyon rejoins the Christmas Bird Count this year as an official count circle. Over 2,000 individual counts are scheduled to take place throughout the Americas and beyond from Dec. 14 to Jan. 5. "Participating in the count is fun and educational, and helps scientists understand national trends in bird populations," said Dave Roemer, natural resources specialist at Bryce Canyon National Park. "Each volunteer observer is an important contributor, helping to shape the overall direction of bird conservation," said Geoff LeBaron, National Audubon's Christmas Bird Count Director. " Audubon and our partners rely on data from the CBC database to prioritize our bird conservation work." Other local area count circles include Escalante, Zion National Park, Cedar City, St. George, Silver Reef, Kanab and Glen Canyon. Information about Christmas Bird Counts in Utah is available at", www.utahbirds.org/cbc. For more information or to volunteer, contact Dave Roemer at (435) 834-4901 or dave_roemer@nps.gov.
