NOTICE The Executive Secretary of the Utah Solid and Hazardous Waste Control Board has issued an emergency hazardous waste treatment permit, UT-0372006, to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management. This permit authorized the Bureau of Land Management to treat by open detonation, potentially explosive material found in an inactive rock quarry located approximately 10 miles north of Panguitch, Utah. A BLM employee discovered a small core hole in the inactive quarry that appeared to still be loaded with some form of explosive. It was determined unsafe to try and remove or otherwise access the explosive material and leaving the explosive in place posed a continuing risk to human health and the environment. The BLM has arranged for the Utah Southern Region Bomb Squad to'assist in conducting the treatment. The permit was issued on June 13, 2006, and expired on June 14, 2006. A written emergency permit has also been issued and a copy of this permit is available for public inspection during normal business hours, or other hours with prior arrangement, at the offices of the Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste, 4th Floor, Martha Hughes Cannon Building, 288 North 1460 West, Salt Lake City, Utah. For further information or questions concerning this emergency permit, please contact Boyd Swenson at (801) 538-6170.
