She was born December 13, 1933, at Ruby's Inn, Utah to Carlson Henry and Thelma Alvey Syrett. Her mother passed away when she was 5 years-old and her father remarried Jean Bybee who lovingly raised her as one of her own daughters. She grew up spending time between the family homes in Panguitch, Utah and Ruby's Inn. She helped work the family business at Ruby's Inn and especially enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her grandparents, Ruby and Minnie Syrett. She also spent much of her summers with her maternal grandparents, George and Annie Alvey, in Escalante, Utah. She graduated from Panguitch High School in 1951. She furthered her education at Dixie College and received her Bachelor's Degree in education from Brigham Young University in 1958. Mary, her older sister, died leaving behind her husband and several small children. Dawnetta and her brother Arthur also contracted polio but were more fortunate and survived. Dawnetta did suffer some debilitation and later in life suffered from post-polio syndrome. She said it was due to her father that she was able to survive and the fact that he pushed her to fight the disease that she was able to go on with her life, get an education and have a family. After graduation from BYU, she took a position with the school district in San Jose, California. In San Jose, she met the love of her life, Craig Rutledge. They were married in the St. George Temple, June 27, 1959. After marrying, Craig and Dawnetta, returned to BYU, where Craig obtained his degree in psychology. Her husband, Craig, passed away September 12, 1994. Dawnetta was a life-long member of the LDS faith. She had a firm testimony of her divine origins. She expressed this testimony through service throughout her life. She served in various organizations in her LDS wards serving in the Primary, Sunday School, and Relief Society.
