Two fun filled days to remember as Minersville celebrated its 4th annual Punkin' Festival and 150th birthday. Earlier in the week, the students at Minersville School received their own pumpkins. On Friday evening, they brought their parents and carved pumpkins to the park pavillion. On Saturday morning, a 5K race was run. Ryan Slade won the mens division. Ruth Carter won the wornens and Elijah Steele won the youth division. The rest of the day involved games, contests, face painting and musical entertainment. Max Carter and Betty Marshall were crowned King and Queen of the festivities, and a roast beef dinner was served to the accdmpaninment of live music by "Loose onnections." To finish off the festival, the crowd moved to the east of town for pumpkin chuckin catapult contest. Three teams built catapults and competed in the contest. Dud reached over and took his wife's hand and they smiled. It hit him a block later. Like a thunderstorm that sweeps over the horizon. Like a tsunami, or at least like Dud thought a tsunami would be like, overpowering. He sped home and ran into the house, forgetting to help Anita with the groceries. Anita heard the typing going on in the next room, and brought her husband a cup of coffee. She had a peek over his shoulder. Oh yes, it was the duchess and the truck driver again. "The duchess looked up from her cup of coffee at the truck stop in Budapest," he had written, "and there he stood, like a knight of old, holding his trucking coffee mug, and with a copy of the local paper under his arm. She had no way of knowing, right then, that he couldn't read th.e paper, being an American trucker on special assignment, but he liked to look at the cartoons. "Is this seat taken?" he asked. "Why, no," she replied, lowering her pince nez, so she could see him better. "Won't you join me?" -Aah,1" thought the trucker, 'she speaks English. She's probably not from around here."1 "But he was wrong on that. How did he have any way of knowing that she came from that castle up on the hill outside of town. He'd noticed that when he hit the jake brakes coming down the incline, sending rabbits and red stags scurrying for cover. If he'd known then what was coming, the murders, the child of their love, how cold that castle was in winter, would he have sat down with the duchess? Who knows?" Dud looked up at Anita and smiled. She handed him the coffee. "Back on track with the duchess?" she asked. "And the truck driver," he said. "And the truck driver." This year the targets were moved in to accommodate not only the more qualified shooters, but the inexperienced shooters as well. We also added a pistol shoot this year for everyone's pleasure. Twenty seven shooters enjoyed the weather, the comraderle, and the shooting. They ranged from the teens to over 60. Joking came naturally. Many shooters shared their weapons with those that had none, showing good sportsmanship. Those that were less experienced received help from one of our Range Officers as well as their competitors. This year we held the Best Shot of Beaver County contest. Seventeen contestants from throughout the county entered the contest, which included the freehand 25 yard hand gun, the freehand 80 yard rifle and the 160 yard rifle targets. Fiv.a contestants tied at the end of regulation. They were Cress Lorenzo, Will Bartlett, Kaden Littlefield, Tayler Pearson, and John Craw. -Will Bartlett ended up winning the tie breaker and was presented fre-Best Shot in Beaver County award for 2009. /'".--We would like to thank all that participated this year and would like to invite those who think they could have beat. Will to come share in the fun next year. • . ^£l$r:'•" Again thanks for a wonderful day of shooting. Thank You # I would like to thank the good people of Beaver City for giving me the opportunity to continue my run for Beaver City Mayor. I have learned a great many things in my past 20 years of civic service but this last four years as Mayor has been the capstone of all that learning. I know that I am now much more qualified to make difficult and critical decisions during the next four years. I!m grateful that Beaver City is on sound financial footing even during these difficult economic times and if elected I intend to keep it that way. ft I will be knocking on doors for the next few weeks and I would like to know of your concerns. If elected I pledge to be a servant to all. I intend to meet the needs of the citizens of Beaver without being overly intrusive or making the cost of government too financially burdensome. I would be lyappy to schedule some time to meet with you. ^ S j ^ : /s/ Leonard Foster • "/ Apawpoti^announcement |
