Show A7 WELCOME BACK College and tips for success College life can take its toll on your time and sanity, so don't let yourself fall behind By Cameron Simek Life Editor @skabomb When it comes to time management, people who fall into the college age bracket aren't often attributed for knowing how to do it without failing first. It's not that hard to accomplish; it just takes some trial and error. The most important thing to remember is something very simple but can be extremely hard for some people. Do not skip your classes. Not even once. It's a slippery slope, and you don't want to fall. It's simple advice, though in practice it can be difficult to follow. Without your parents there to make sure you get up and off to school every morning, and the threat of truancy no longer an issue, skipping class may seem like a very attractive option. This is compounded when you have that occasional teacher that just doesn't care whether or not you attend class. Your personal success is based on the things you learn, and if you're not there to learn them, well, it's pretty self-explanatory what happens next. Set your alarm to get to campus early, so you won't have to worry about finding a parking space and being late because of that either. The usual rule for making sure you're spending enough time studying for class is two to three hours outside of class for every hour spent in class. This can be somewhat difficult for students who enjoy having an active social life, though it is a proper estimate for doing well in your classes. Get started on the first day of school by setting time aside to study. There may not be anything important on the first day, but take the time to really read over the syllabus and really get a handle on your class schedule so you can effectively plan your study time in the future. The final piece of advice almost flies in the face of the other advice presented here. Make sure to take time out for yourselves and time with your friends. College is stressful and can sometimes destroy people if you can't strike that perfect balance between work and fun. It's important to make sure that you don't spend all your time working; you're still young and part of that is going out and having fun. Sometimes it may cause you to mess up, but that's all part of the college experience and failure inspires you to learn and do better the next time around. Wear proper college attire Don't wear other colleges clothing to your school, please It's important to show pride for the school you are attending now, not the one you like, or couldn't get in. By Cameron Simek Life Editor @skabomb Many people have pet peeves. They don't like people chewing with their mouths open, or talking with their mouth full, or keeping things too messy, what have you. There is one thing that should get . on everyone's nerves at this campus, however. That is wearing clothes in support of another college. You see it all through the hallways, BYU and U of U attire on enough students to make you question what college you're currently attend- ing. That may be a slight exaggeration, but the point is still valid. It's important to show pride for the school you are attending now, not the one you like, or couldn't get in. Everyone should have at least one piece of UVU attire, considering you are given one during orientation. Wear that every once in a while. Show UVU you care that they gave out free shirts to incoming students. It's also easy to wear that bevy of shirts you received from your high school every day to school. They're just sitting in the closet, taking up space and in an easy to grab location. Please, don't put them on. You attend college now, it's time to put high school behind you and leave what happened in high school there. Take the experiences you had with you, leave all the student council and graduation shirts behind. You also don't have to PHOTO COURTESY BYU.EDU You go to UVU, not high school or another college, dress the part. 11111 " READY FOR CHALLENGES. -i." 4t- 4 ' START -,- IP--N. z zeper-org ,ma- • -ii ,. ii• ., 711.X 1 }Or A i 4 • .. t ,,_ 0 - ." dress for success every single day. As most upperclassmen can tell you, dressing up every day is difficult, and it singles you out as a new student. It's not difficult to find the appropriate attire for a successful day at school. Just pick any shirt that you want to wear that isn't from another school. Most college students just roll out of bed, hopefully shower, then throw on whatever shirt they can find in their closet, or on the floor. It's not terribly difficult to prepare for a day at school. Not too manypeople care what you look like as long as you show up with a healthy appetite for knowledge. Just remember that you attend UVU. I • lib - - .., .s.e..; s ... , -•Ia, wiNt 4 - . .1.. . .
