Show ALEXANDER FROM B6 )111 114 1:1 1r$111101 r i IL. hl , CONNOR ALLEN/UVUREVIEW Students and faculty listen to Jason Alexander as he lectures during one of his several workshops, which were held at UVU early last week. ENVIRONMENT FROM B6 Education about sustainable living will be the purpose of the community garden. The goal is that it will increase knowledge on where food comes from, as well as increase the sense of community at UVU. "We believe that a garden would help students at UVU become better stewards throughout their lives," Sanchez said. With a total of seven active members and sixty membership applications from interested students, the club is growing. Many of the members share a wide range of values where environmental policy is concerned. Sanchez emphasized that membership is not limited to environmentalists. "We encourage people to just come and participate and talk about what they think should be done with issues that concern the environment," Sanchez said. This semester's club events included various speakers and documentary movie nights. The club is currently in the process of coordinating a recycling plant tour, in addition to organizing an upcoming service project in coordination with the Wildlife Club to restore the habitat for Our major project this semester is looking at how we can get a community garden at UN. -Andrea Sanchez the June Sucker. "One of the best ways to spread awareness, I feel, is to actually get outside and do something," Sanchez said. I'm beginning to enjoy directing more than acting but that's only because of the kind of acting I've had to do most of the time. The directing is far more compelling And I do love directing anyway. On the acting side, it's hard to say which is the most rewarding because they are actually all very different and they all have pros and cons. The pro to anything with a camera is it tends to be a new experience everyday. You're not often called upon to repeat the material and so there is literally a new challenge every day. The con of it is you tend to do the work in very small dollops and you're not ultimately in charge of what the audience sees. And for someone who invests a lot in the "how" of what you're doing, to have that "how" monkeyed with - even when it's monkeyed with to your benefit - is a little disconcerting. So at the end of the day, even though theater is the most grueling, the most taxing, the most frightening, it is also the most rewarding because you have to have consummate skills to do it well and you know that when that curtain goes up, it's you. It's you and the audience. And no matter what the director said, the writer said, no matter what you rehearsed, no matter what, what, what, what, what, it's you that is going to make or break that experience and that illusion for that audience. And that's a thrill. Do you have any upcoming projects that you're working on? Yes and no. I always have things in development and I hate saying that cause it's such a lame thing to say. I have a couple of my own oneperson performance shows that I do for corporate and I have things I do in Vegas. And I've got TV projects in development. I have theater projects in development. And I have the occasional film in development. I'm not a film force so it's going to be harder for me to get going. But, yeah, there's always stuff there. But it's a changing, right now I think the business is radically changing and the people who run it are radically changing and what they need, want and how they put it out there, it's all in flux. So the guys who are much better at this than me, they're scratching their heads and saying, "I don't know how we do this." And I'm kind of waiting for them to figure it out so I can sort of follow in their footsteps. 2012 OSCARS RECAP By KELLY CANNON Life Editor On Feb. 26, the 84th Annual Academy Awards took place in Hollywood, CA. In case you didn't catch all three hours of the awards show (or you were smart and didn't watch it), I am here to fill you in on everything you missed. First, as I mentioned in my previous Cannonized Cinema column previewing the Oscars, there were nine films nominated for Best Picture. I feel that this is at least four too many (or in the case of this year, one "Moneyball" too many). However, it was the silent film "The Artist" that took home Best Picture. For the most part, I agree with this decision. To make a silent film in this day and age is not only bold, it's down right risky. But the filmmakers were able to make a beautiful film that kept the attention of today's ADHD audience. Kudos to Michael Hazanavicius , director of "The Artist" who also took home Best Director and to Jean Dujardin for winning Best Actor in "The Artist." Meryl Streep took home another Oscar for her performance in "The Iron Lady." Streep, who won Best Actress, has been nominated 17 times for either Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress, more than any other person. She had previously won Best Supporting Actress in 1979 for "Kramer vs. Kramer" and won Best Actress in 1982 for Best Actress for "Sophie's Choice." I'll admit that I'm a little biased when it comes to Streep. I believe she is a fantastic actress and her 17 nominations and three wins prove that. I'm almost tempted to spearhead a campaign to rename the Best Actress Award the Meryl Streep Award. Christopher Plummer 1'2' took home Best 111■11r"' Supporting Actor for his role in "Beginners." Many feel this is an honor long overdue for the 82-year- ..,,Er — old actor, a sentiment I couldn't agree with more. Octavia Spencer won Best Supporting Actress for her role in "The Help." Some believe this was because the Academy knew "The Help" wasn't going to win Best Picture, Best Director or Best Actress so it had to win something. While I wish that politics didn't play a role in deciding the Academy Awards, it unfortunately is a reality of the awards, and I feel this time it played a hand in Spencer winning. Oh, one more thing. The song "Man or Muppet" from the film "The Muppets" by Bret McKenzie won Best Original song. If you haven't seen "The Muppets," go see it and you'll know why it deserved to win.
