Show A4 One of these people has a mental illness... can you tell which one? PHOTO COURTESY OF STOCKICHNG Mental illness - don't be sh BY JEFF JACOBSEN Online Content Manager One out of every four people in the U.S. are suffering from some sort of mental illness at any given moment. The odds that a person will experience mental illness at some point in their life are even higher, at about 50 percent. While depressive illnesses are the largest contributors to mental illness, social phobia comes in at a surprising third most common in the U.S. Some might dismiss the symptoms as mere shyness, but it goes beyond just being timid. Also known as social anxiety, this disorder overwhelms its victims with an irrational fear of situations in which there is a potential to be judged or scrutinized by others. People affected by social phobia often have trouble doing everyday things, like going to the grocery store or • h 1It going to work on the day of a meeting, because they feel overly self conscious and find it impossible to focus. Bad cases incite nausea, profuse sweating, trembling and trouble speaking, causing avoidance of all social situations at high costs. It can certainly be argued that social phobia symptoms are universal. Everyone, at one point or another, has likely felt intimidated in a social situation, worried about what others were thinking. Those who have not personally experienced the disease might quickly dismiss evidence of a real problem as just being nervous. They might suggest things like 'getting over it,' facing the fear,' or they might point out the irrationality of the situation. Critics point to the almost complete lack of biological evidence as proof that mental diseases don't exist. But therein lies the problem — victims of social pho- W http://en.wikipedia.org/wild/Maln_Page — bia realize their fears are irrational. They know they shouldn't feel the way they do, but they can't help it. If they could think their way out of the problem, they most likely would. That's why it's called a disease, not an inadequacy. Quantifying feelings is not really possible, so proving a mental illness exists is not exactly easy. Victims overwhelmed by the idea that they are responsible for the way they feel can be, in a sense, bullied out of seeking help, diagnosis or treatment. The lack of significant biological evidence and the weight of social norms are stacked against the mentally ill. Some viable treatments are not even covered by mainstream health coverage. What it comes down to is that the idea of mental health is subjective. Since there is no universal norm for cognitive behavior, any definition of deviation from this non- CAPITAL FROM Al h Gmail - W • 24..:-,tt. During the week of Jan. 30, UVUSA will be working on getting students to join their petition. Students will see tables set up around campus student signatures will be collected, and representatives located so letters can be written to them. Jared Roberts, Chief Justice of UVUSA is heading up this project. Last year Christopher Lang, previous senator for science and health, did a fundraiser for the science building, making $10,000-15,000. This was only a drop in the bucket for a building, but it showed the legislators their effort. "The more you can show you're raising money the more legislators know you are trying," Roberts said. A different angle will be taken this year. Roberts is putting his efforts into making UVU a stronger voice among the legislators rather than showing fundraising effort. "Showing a need is the angle we are taking," Roberts said. If funding is given, UVU will then bid for contractors, and continue the planning stages before breaking ground. The new building will go to the north of the library, and a parking structure will be added in the area. This building will add 60 classrooms, 150 offices and 20 study rooms to campus, along with an auditorium. "I hope students realize their efforts go a long way," Roberts said. Social phobia doesn't get as much attention as other mental illnesses because with the others, there is often semblance physical evidence that something is wrong. With social anxiety, evidence is either smaller or nonexistent, and symptoms can easily be mistaken for other, benign issues. Approximately 15 million American adults have social phobia, worrying weeks or even months about situations that most people encounter on a daily basis without a second thought. Psychotherapy and medication can be used to treat the disease, but someone who didn't think the disease was real would never seek the necessary treatment. In addition to the blackouts and Internet-wide opposition, demonstrations were held in cities across the U.S. including Seattle, New York and San Francisco, followed by a shrinking list of congressmen who supported the legislature. The official Senate vote was scheduled for Jan. 24, but the bill was retracted. Sen. While funding for the parking structure will come directly from parking revenue, student fees will pay for the Student Life and Wellness Building. The decision to use student fees for this building instead of waiting for state funding came from the student government, but not from this year's staff. According to David Millet, the initial increase in student fees to fund the building started several years ago. This year's student government team may not have started the project, but Millet explained why he thought that it's still a good idea. "We want to give students a reason to stay on campus so we can change the commuter feel of the campus into a university feel," Millet said. The 18 months of construction it should take to finish the job may seem like a high price to pay for a different feel on campus. Millet says this change, though, will complete the "full-life experience" on campus, and play a large part in increasing student retention. The amenities that will come with the Student Life and Wellness Building are certainly ample enticements. Along with student offices for the student government, newspaper and the Outdoor Adventure Center, the building will include basketball courts, bowling lanes, climbing walls and a running track, as well as other exercise facilities. The ultrabook fad is aimed at allowing active college students and the fast-paced businessmen and women the convenience of a lightcomputing device like a tablet, with the power and versatility of a laptop. It was also announced that Microsoft has a Kinect for Windows giving all the long awaited power to users, to act like Tom Cruise from "Minority Report" in public. Microsoft has also shown off their Windows Phones, which sport the Metro user interface, UI and Windows 8, which also runs off the Metro UI. This is exciting because it means there will finally be Windows tablets, whether this is good or bad, is up to the user to decide. The touch-screen Windows computer some may have will finally have an interface that works. What that means for those who still use the mouse? It is not certain. LG , Sony, Samsung and others have also announced new Smart TV's, some running Google TV. TV's are going to be able to access the Internet and have games like Angry Birds. Netflix, Hulu and HBO Go, are also a given. Having a little computer in your pocket probably sounded silly a few years ago. With the new technology being created, it will no doubt be an exciting year in the tech world.
