Peter and Anne Schaefer, founders of Tanglewood Marionettes, have been touring with their handmade puppets and classic tales around New England since 1993, and now they are coming to Brigham Young University from Sept. 15-17 to perform two stories — "The Dragon King" and "Perseus and Medusa." Having grown up in a family of puppeteers, Peter Schaefer has performed since he was young. His parents started their own company and occasionally, he had the opportunity to substitute in rehearsals. Upon turning 13, Peter began to work with The Bennington Puppets and continued to work there every summer through high school. After graduating college, he was invited to tour full-time. Anne and Peter met in the late '80s while they were touring with The Bennington Puppets. After following different paths for a time, they met back up in New England and after wedding, began their own family oriented company. When the couple had two children of their own, they expanded their puppetry ranks to include Jennifer Tebo and Stephen Hancock --two puppeteers who were first introduced to puppetry in college. Peter and Anne make their own marionettes, and are still using the ones they started out with. Anne does the bulk of the puppet-making. She also takes on the roles of artistic director and office manager while putting together the aesthetic vision of stories and shows. Peter takes on the more technical approach controlling staging, stringing and works as the front man. While the settings and the morals of each story performed by Tanglewood Marionettes differ, the appeal is the same — the shows are meant to be family friendly and are to be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. PARDOE THEATRE, BYU CAMPUS "THE DRAGON KING" Friday, Sept. 16 @ 10 a.m., 7 p.m. Saturday at 11 a.m. "PERSEUS AND MEDUSA" Thursday, Sept. 15 @ 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 @ 2 p.m. $6 for children $8 for ages 12 and up. After each performance, the puppeteers will engage in a question/answer discussion with the audience. THE V MAGAZINE I 7 |
