Show Women's basketball schedule released Cross country opens season in Wyoming OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University women's basketball head coach Cathy Nixon has announced her 2011-12 Wolverine schedule. The schedule will feature games against four of the five in-state Division I programs, as well as the school's third full Great West Conference slate. Southern Utah will be the first in-state foe that UVU will face this year when the Wolverines travel to Cedar City on Nov. 30. Two weeks later (Dec. 10), SUU will return the favor by coming to Orem. Weber State will visit the UCCU Center two nights earlier (Dec. 8). The Wolverines will also head up to the Dee Events Center in Ogden to face the Wildcats on Dec. 21. UVU will round out its in-state schedule with trips to Salt Lake City to face Pac-12 Utah on Dec. 28 and Logan to take on WAC-foe Utah State Jan. 7. "We feel that this year's schedule will be good for this team," said Nixon. "We have some really good teams coming in that will challenge us and also a number of road games that will be a test. But we are more experienced than we were a last year and we feel that it will help us have more success early on." UVU will kick-off the season on the road in Southern California at Long Beach State on Nov. 11. The Wolverines will then return home to face Walla Walla University Nov. 14 and Idaho State Nov. 19. The Wolverines will then make the trek to Flagstaff, Ariz., over Thanksgiving break to participate in Northern Arizona's Thanksgiving Tournament. There UVU will play host NAU and Kent LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Utah Valley University women's and men's cross country programs had solid opening season performances at the Wyoming Invitational Friday evening as they finished second and third respectively. "Both teams ran really well for us," UVU head coach Scott Houle said. "We are redshirting a couple of our leaders and these new athletes came in and showed us that they can race on their own." The top finisher for the UVU women in the 2.5-mile race was junior Shelise Walker who placed 10th with a time of 15:11.1. On the men's side UVU sophomore Cliff Nielson led the way by placing seventh overall with a time of 22:34.5 in the 4.25-mile race. Behind him sophomore Mike Felix came in 12th (23:04.5). freshman Alex Dutton 13th (23:09.4), junior Chris Claflin 17th (23:15.6) and sophomore Macy Butterfield 19th (23:23.4). "I'm really proud of the newcomers," Houle added. "They showed that they are on their way to improve this team and make it better. Overall I am excited with our results." DAVIS FROM B1 "My wife is my rock. I wouldn't be able to do anything without her." Davis said. "She could really say 'I don't want you to play soccer,' but she can see how much I love it and enjoy it." Davis has been working hard to motivate the team to feel the same way, a challenge for club teams lacking roster continuits. Club teams don't offer scholarships and ultimately a player has no educational or financial obligation to be at practice. Players must take it upon themselves to show up and win games. "I've announced vocally that this is a club team, you're going to have to pay to be here," Davis said. "You just have to have the passion to play the game. You've got to love the sport." Davis hopes his commitment will be evident on and off the field as he dedicates his time to be a better player and end his university career proud of his decision to play for UVU. "I didn't want to be sitting five years from now thinking `what if I would have played soccer and stuck with it?'" he said. 9/11 FROM B1 first pitch in one game wearing a bullet proof vest. "Jeter told him that if he (Bush) went out there he had to throw a strike," Pacione said. "They had secret service agents dressed as umpires lining the field." Most ceremonial first pitches are thrown from just in front of the mound, but as a show of strength our President said no to that suggestion and threw from the rubber. In an even greater show of strength, that pitch was not lobbed over to the catcher or dribbled in the dirt. "Not only did he throw from the mound but he dotted it in there," Mahoney said. "That pitch was a perfect strike." In the aftermath, most felt like New Yorkers even if in spirit only. Whether it was 45 minutes upstate where Melioris and Baker were or across the country in Orem, UT where they currently play. Melioris, Baker, Mahoney and Pacione all come from different backgrounds, took different routes of getting into professional baseball, and play the game in a unique way. Now they are all on the same team, even if for only one year. But just as they were 10 years ago, they find themselves united in one goal and one purpose. On this 9/11, these Owlz players not only help to remind others of that tragic day, but who they became in the days that followed. aged him to continue. "My wife told me to go and try out for the UVU men's soccer team and see how I liked it." Davis said. "I really liked the guys, I really liked our program, and I really liked the coach." Davis starts his week days at 5:30 a.m. with physical training for the ROTC. Afterwardghe's in class fulfilling his 14-credit hour schedule, followed by soccer practice and open labs; all while supporting his wife and two children. In the beginning of Dec., the Wolverines will come home for five consecutive games. The homestand will feature games with Tulsa (Dec. 3), two in-state teams, Northern Arizona (Dec. 17) and former Great West and now Summit League foe South Dakota (Dec. 19). One of the unique aspects the terrorists didn't count on was how unifying the attacks would be in the days and months to come. It was an act that not only brought Republicans and Democrats together, but Red Sox and Yankees fans as well. "We are all Yankees fans," Mahoney said. "Except for [pitcher Garret] Baker. He's a Red Sox fan." When the Yankees made the World Series weeks later, it seemed a sign of justice in the world, even if it was just the sporting world. President George W.
