Show CRAIG HUMPHREYS Age: 41 Major: Emergency Services Administration Hobbies/interests: Fighting fires, being in the outdoors, horseback riding, snowmobiling and spending time with his kids. B glancing school, work and family life can be difficult, especially when home is two hours away from campus — and that's the time it takes when the driver is used to his vehicle being a fire engine with sirens blaring. Craig Humphreys, the bachelor's degree valedictorian for the College of Technology and Computing, might just be the ideal example of nontraditional student success. Although he is currently a fire marshal for the North Logan City Fire Department, he decided ten years ago to get a degree. By primarily working with Distance Education, he has been able to accomplish just that while handling a high-pressure job and raising four children with his wife. "I plugged in on the slow track, but I made it," Humphreys said. "The Distance Ed program here's terrific. It's been really nice to work with." Through his hard work, perseverance and passion for what he does, Humphreys has shown that those traits really can help one to have it all. What are you going to do once you graduate? Continue as a fire marshal for North Logan City Fire Department and hopefully watch for any promotions that come up. Hopefully my degree will help qualify me. Take the summer off from school — I'll look forward to that. The one thing I am looking into academically [is that] I am interested in pursuing the Executive Fire Officer Program. That's sort of the national fire academy in Maryland. It's comparative to a master's program in the fire officers' world. What was your greatest experience at UVU? The best experience is meeting individuals that really become friends and peers. The Fire Services is a pretty close-knit group of people. Those people I've met — I know I can call on them for help or ideas throughout my career. What was your worst experience at UVU? Waiting for grades. I guess it's not a worst. That's probably what drives me crazy — just waiting for grades. Accredited College ACCSC, 20 Month Program! State YOUNG FAMILY DENTAL If you could give yourself as a freshman one piece of advice, what would it be? Time management. Sit down and, especially with Distance Ed, you really need to schedule your time appropriately and put the time and effort into each class. ... Use a calendar and write it down. That would be my best tip. If I don't put it down on my calendar, the chances of it happening are less. What was the most influential thing that happened outside of school? Attending the National Fire Academy in Maryland. I've been able to get some classes back there. That has really been the motivation, from those instructors back there, ... for me to pursue a higher education and a college degree.
