On March 10, the Marie CleggJones Speech Contest will give students a chance to fine-tune their skills. Communications Professor Janet Colvin, who is helping coordinate the contest, commented on the chance for experience afforded by such a competition. "This is an opportunity for any UVU student to practice their public speaking skills, especially those who are in, or who have taken the public speaking course, Communication 1020," Colvin said. The competition will hold two preliminary rounds on March 10, one at 4 p.m. and the other at 5 p.m. Although these are not open to the public, the final round will be. Each of the public speaking class sections has at least one student participating. Those wanting to compete must be registered by March 7. The winning student will win $500, second place will win $300 and third place will win $100. The speeches may be on any topic as long as they are persuasive in nature and stay within the 5-7 minute time limit Speeches should be well-organized and welldelivered. "Everyone will need to use public speaking skills sometime in their lives and this is a wonderful way to prepare, practice, and polish those skills," Colvin said. News Editor The Orem Institute will have a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles speak at the Institute building, though it will not be Elder Robert D. Hales, as originally advertised. Elder Quentin L. Cook will be speaking as part of the Friday Noon Devotional series on March 4. Hales was first slated to visit, but had scheduling conflicts that prevented him from speaking. Cook has been a member of the Twelve since the Fall of 2007. He was called as a member of the Presidency of the Seventy earlier in 2007. Previous to that calling, he was a member of the First and Second Quorum of the Seventy starting in 1996. The talk will be held in the chapel with extra seating in the overflow and gym. Following Cook's talk, there will be a munch and mingle in the gym. Tuition continued up for the shortage, in this case, the students. "We can't afford to be cut anymore," Holland said. "We can't cut faculty. I think we're one of the leanest institutions in the state." The lean financial state directly contrasts the school's leap in growth over the past six years. Due to that growth, the school would like to bring in more faculty to accommodate the increasingly large student body. Instead, they are faced with trying to save what faculty they have in the face of a decreasing budget. According to Holland, the school's professors have not received raises of any sort over the past three years. While their wages Art Photo Editor sjbuntjerOgrnall.corn have remained static, their medical insurance premiums are going to increase. The situation is less than ideal for college professors, who may look elsewhere for more financially secure settings, leaving UVU too few teachers overall and settling for adjunct teachers. "Many of our adjuncts are very fine teachers, but they don't come with the latest training and experience," Holland said. "We need more salaried, full-time, Ph.D-credentialed faculty." With the state taking away money to gain such faculty, the responsibility will lie on students to help provide for them. "If we just cut and we don't have any way to compensate for that, then we would, say, have to let some people go in One Stop, or we'd have to cut out a program, or we would have to draw back on the employment center," Holland said. Holland followed that by stating the consequences of such actions. Longer waits at One-Stop, the unavailability of classes needed to graduate due to faculty shortages, lack of staff to help students with financial aid and a malcontent faculty were chief among them.
