Show All Monday • August 11, 2008 Lights, cameras, Tower Theatre! Local filmmakers get ready for the next open film night at the Tower Theatre Greg Wilcoxl Life writer Many of us have funny memories of making amateur yet entertaining home movies and toying around with video cameras in our younger days. For local filmmaker Ryan Tapp, this love of creating film has always been a part of life. "I think the reason I started making movies and became so intrigued by it is be- cause it was sort of a fantasy fulfillment to see myself on camera and become my own movie star. When you're a kid and have movie camera, you can hook it up to the TV and say, "Hey, I'm on TV!" It makes you feel like you're famous," said Ryan. For those like Ryan, whose hobby, craft and passion are film, though, there are few venues outside of YouTube that offer the welcome of an appreciative en- from FACEBOOK • A8 The Dark Knight came out, several of my friends joined groups for the film, as well as groups for Batman comics, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, and other related pages. There are also groups propounding the Joker and Two-Face as modern philosophers, as if nihilism and existentialism are fresh, new concepts. The Heath Ledger fan page annoys me the most because almost all my friends who have joined it claim with pride, "Heath Ledger is the greatest actor ever." I've known each of these friends long enough that I know to look for signs of the apocalypse the moment they consider touching the late actor's tour de force Brokeback Mountain with a tenfoot pole. I have to wonder what it means to be a fan of something when there are fan clubs for countries and phones. I have to wonder if being a fan merely means liking what's trendy since there are fan clubs under seven different names for the same books and movies. I still love Facebook, and I continue to have fun with its bookshelf. Flair, and quiz applications. But these things are simple pleasures. Perhaps before joining a fan club of any sort, one should consider if one is joining a group to prove one's fandom ~ or if being a fan is something that needs to be proved at all. ria's Secret fandom, which boasts almost 440,000. Oh. don't get me wrong. I'm just as guilty for joining fan pages. I'm listed as a member of Boy Meets World, "I'd rather use a typewriter than Windows," and "You're killing me, Smalls!" Movies, sports teams, bands - all of these I can understand. But when I see a news feed declare that three of my friends just joined the fan page for "Joseph Smith -- the prophet" (pushing 10.000 fans already), then I have to wonder what the definition of a fan is. It's like hearing your favorite song overplayed on the radio and then slowly coming to hate it. Fan clubs like the one for Joseph Smith (as well as the groups for baptisms) have me particularly unnerved. What I picture is someone in front of a computer eager to join an LDS church fan page while saying, "Oh, dear me, yes. Yes, I must join. I am a true Mormon, and I have to show support for my religion. After all, who's on the Lord's side, who?" Then he or she proceeds to join the Book of Mormon fan page. (Of course, let's not, single out Mormons; the Quran has about 300 fans.) Some of these groups might only be about what's currently "trendy." There is a group of 13,000 fans called "Edward Cullen owns my soul," and the title should make the nature of that group obvious. In the week that vironment.Thankftillyfilling that void, the Tower Theatre in Salt Lake City offers an open-mic short-film night at which local filmmakers can showcase their work. The Tower Theatre has been doing open film nights for about 2 years now, and the event has yielded much success and participation. To enter, filmmakers must bring their movies in DVD format to the theater on the day of the event between 6 and 8 p.m. The movies must be shorter than 15 minutes and are usually around 10. There is a $5 submission fee for filmmakers, and a mere $1 admission fee for attendance that goes toward maintenance. Typically, 14 or 15 films are chosen, making for a night of one and a half to two from THE hours of film to watch. In addition to the communal aspect, this event is competitive. At each open film night, two awards are given: audience choice and critics' choice. The audience chooses their favorite film by filling out a form given at the theater, and local film critics attend the event to give critiques. This February, there will be a best of operi-mic short-film night, at which all the films that won awards during the previous nights will be shown. The event not only allows local filmmakers to showcase their talent and love for filmmaking, but also provides them with an opportunity to meet and network with other filmmakers. This allows some to expand their creative repertoire and resources for filmmaking. "Every once in a while, you'll see a spark of genius/ 1 Ryan said, referring to films he has helped make. "Later - years later maybe — someone watches it with you, you start thinking that if I actually put effort into it, I could make it better and more enjoyable to watch. From that point on, it becomes an obsession to make the film as perfect as possible. It's great to be able to see how other people who I don't know react to the finished product." Will the open-mic short film night at the Tower Theatre open the doors for future filmmakers? Possibly. But this is n6t always the objective participants have in mind. "I don't know if I could pursue a career in film. Unless I could be lazy and do whatever I wanted, I could never work for someone else," Ryan said. "If for some reason I ever get recognition, that's awesome, but I don't really worry about that or care. Until then I'm just going to have fun. It's just a fun and fulfilling hobby for me, you know? I don't really expect fame.'* The next open mlc short film night at the ToweY Theater will be on August 27th,at 9 P.M. For more Information visit http://www. slfsopenmlcnlght.com/ 0pen_Mic_Night-Main. html. GROVE-A8 Currently, these shows rotate between three different performers or bands. Mama's Boys is a father and sons group which mixes classic country with re-mixed surprises, like a Doobie Brothers cover. Boots Robinson plays classic country aimed at the Baby Boomer generation with some cowboy poetry tossed in for good measure. Their newest act, Sizzling Strings, is a family of musicians, the youngest of which is three years old. Each of these shows is centered on a western theme, which matches the decor. And be warned: There are also typical western characters such as the drunken prospector and Black Bart running about in the audience. While many other theaters have an almost stuffy atmosphere, "You can't be [uptight] here. We don't give you that option. You got a crazy sheriff running around. You got a saloon madam running around. ... They're coming to your table, hiding from each other -- they're shooting each other.... You can't help but lighten up." At 10 o'clock when these acts have ended, the theater fuses karaoke with comedy. The audience is invited to sing on stage, while interacting with house comedians. This will go on until everyone has left, usually winding down after midnight. While they try to keep this show rated G, it is not recommended to bring children under the age of six to the late-night performances. On Monday nights, Showtime Utah presents a genuine variety show.
