The Honorary Title brought a little different mood to the show, playing their acoustic-driven indie rock. The band came out in support of their latest release Scream And Light Up The Sky and appealed to the crowd with their almost shoegaze-style performance. Frontman Jared Gorbel bantered with the crowd; commenting on how interested in the girls in the audience he was and constantly joking with the crowd to lighten up ad have a good time. Then finally the moment the whole evening had been leading up to, Mae took the stage. They opened with their instrumental song "Futuro" and then delved right into a very visually interesting show with different lighting and visual effects. Dave Elkins and crew focused their set on their debut album, Destination: Beautiful which is celebrating it's fifth anniversary this year. The set included classic Mae like "Embers and Envelopes" and "This Time is the Last Time" and also included a good mix of their new material from Singularity. The band ended the set by playing an encore of the first two songs of 2005's The Everglow, "We're So Far Away" and "Someone Else's Arms," They blended the two songs together seamlessly, very much like the album, creating a very masterful ending to the evening's show. An end for most, except for those who donated to Habitat for Humanity and stuck around for the aforementioned acoustic performance, which went on until approximately midnight, provided an excellent wind down to the nights show. Another charitable organization, Invisible Children, was also at the show promoting their films, which they are currently screening in various cities around the country. The films benefit displaced children in Africa. The Devil, Daniel Johnston, and SLC Acclaimed singer-songwriter delights admiring crowd Greg Wilcox Life? writer It is evident that at least some form of redemption has come for tortured singersongwriter Daniel Johnston. On a clear night at In the Venue on April 3, Johnston performed his array of quirky and eclectic songs to an excited and expectant crowd. ; Every esoteric-loving !hipster worth his or her weight in haughty music pretentiousness was in attendance. As anybody who has seen the documentary The Devil And Daniel Johnston knows, Johnston's life has been less than serene. He was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder during his freshman year at Abilene Christian University. In 1990. shortly after playing at the South by Southwest music festival, he wrestled control of the plane his father was piloting, causing it to crash. He was subsequently placed in a mental hospital. His sometimes crippling condition has also cost him numerous record contracts throughout the years. Still, Johnston has managed to win the acclaim of artists such as David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, and Bright Eyes, among others. This profound influence and cult status was evidenced by a rare instance of palpable and profound reverence that pervaded the audience this night. Johnston started the show with just himself and his gui- to come up and play with him. "Where is my band? I don't have a lot of jokes," Johnston said. The band backing Johnston that night would be none other than alt-country locals Band of Annuals. The group opened the show but also did a fine job serving Johnston's songs. Johnston wailed away the lyrics to songs like "Rock and Roll EGA" and "Mountaintop." At the end of the set, the audience was delighted to be part of a singalong song of Johnston's called "Devil Town." What makes Johnston's tunes absorbing is their simplicity and childlike nature. By no means technical, his music stands as testimony to the power of music derived through conviction and sincerity. Perhaps this is why he has reached a cult-icon status; he reminds musicians to keep the integrity in their music. PHANTOM PLANET from B5 N E W band has found a new friend by the name of Fueled By Ramen, the record label that has boasted being home to such bands as Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco and Cobra Starship. Now, in hopes of breaking away from the stigma that has surrounded their music for the past few years, Phantom Planet is putting out a new album, Raise The Dead. Prefacing the full-length. Phantom Planet released a limited edition, self-titled tour EP featuring some of the tracks that will be on the album as a sense-tickler, of sorts. The EP tracks do well at picking up where the self-titled LP left off. If the remainder of Raise The Dead can press forward in the fashion of the tour EP, Phantom Planet will come back on the scene in step.
