This summer immersion program is a part of Master of Arts in Chinese studies program at Valparaiso University with a grant form the U.S. Department of Education. The summer immersion program composes topic courses taught by experienced native Chinese teachers in Chinese and an internship based on participants' qualifications and needs. Candidates with three, or more years of Chinese can choose to take only the internship (the last four weeks). Participants of the entire summer program will receive up to six credits (three credits for the internship and three credits for the topic course). VU will provide travel assistance for the international travel and free room and board for participants of the summer program. Students will be responsible for tuition and other expenses. All participants will be required to complete VU forms that are normally required for overseas programs and provide evidence of health insurance and a valid passport. 1513 North Hill Field Road, Suite #3 Faculty member's paper presented at United Nations conference Spencer Shell Assistant News Editor Last winter in Paris, France, Karen Mizell, associate professor of philosophy and 2007 recipient of the Utah Campus Compact Award at UVSC, presented a paper at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) conference. The paper "ServiceLearning in the College Ethics Class" brought about interest from other conference participants because service learning is an effort that is unique to colleges and universities in the U.S. "The conference was focused on crossing cultur- al and national boundaries by using philosophical dialogue," said Mizell. "There is some exciting work going on in the practical application of philosophy. All over the world philosophers are working with children to introduce them to philosophical modes of argument and discourse in order to teach them to become independent thinkers and to help them to be able to reason with people from other nations and cultures. 'The U.S. is far behind the curve. I think there were only 3-4 Americans at the conference. Some philosophers reported that the Norwegian govt. is completely revamping their school curriculum to include philosophy because of the educational value they believe students receive from studying philosophy K-12." UNESCO was founded in 1945 to do more than just build classrooms for learning, but to "build peace in the minds of the men." The Preamble to the Constitution of UNESCO states that, "Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed." With its 192 member states and six associate members, UNESCO strives to promote international co-operation in education, science, culture and communication. Mizell has been invited to another UNESCO-sponsored conference this June in Jerusalem to learn and report on the work going on in the area. Mizell said that she is excited to attend the conference because of the work that philosophers at Hebrew University are doing to teach Palestinian and Israeli kids to sit down with each other and reason together.
