If the University of Utah and other Mountain West Conference schools face the problem of keeping good coaches around for an extended period of time, then you can imagine the problem that could face UVSC with coaches, especially approaching university status. With better coaches come opportunities for those coaches and the possibility of UVU as a steppingstone or bottom rung on the ladder in the careers of great coaches. One possible coaching loss that could be in the near future for the Wolverines is men's basketball Coach Dick Hunsaker. While coaches are being fired and hired here, there and everywhere. Coach Hunsaker's name has to be in the mix for potential positions at bigger schools with better programs. The Mountain West Conference recently had four open jobs for men's basketball coach but Wyoming, New Mexico and Colorado State all filled the position last week. Utah still hasn't hired a new coach after Ray Giacoletti resigned with a little help following another disappointing season on the hill. And although the sports on campus climbed a number of steps to compete at the division I level, the athletics department can expect many more changes as well. The sports on campus are starting to get more media recognition locally. Where Utah used to have the big five UVSC has made it's way into the big six in Utah. Scheduling, recruiting, marketing and conference affiliation could all be affected by the change from state college to university. Some changes will benefit the sports and some might hurt them. When the image committee is formed to decide on logos, a seal, coloring schemes and marketing initiatives. Athletics Director Mike Jacobsen will be pushing to keep things the way they are. "It would push us a hundred steps backward if we were to change our mascot, and that's why if we would have went away from Utah Valley we would have taken some steps backward," he said. If the mascot or colors do change with the transition to university, the athletic department will suffer. All the uniforms already are green and gold and have the Utah Valley name on them without the word State.
