Locally, on Monday, March 19, anti-war protestors assembled for a march and rally expressing opposition to the Iraq war, and candle light vigil mourning the loss of Iraqis and Americans killed in the war. Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, who has established himself firmly in opposition to the war and President Bush, spoke at the rally saying, "'The president has disgraced our armed forces and our nation by prosecuting an illegal war in Iraq." "We think if impeachment were ever justified, this certainly is the time," Anderson told media. "This president, by engaging in such incredible abuses of power, breaches of trust with both the Congress and the American people, and misleading us into this tragic, unbelievable war, the violation of treaties, either international or our Constitution -- our own domestic law, and then his role in heinous human rights abuses, I think all of that together calls for impeachment and certainly would communicate to the rest of the world that is not who we are as the American people." In Washington D.C. Anderson also demonstrated along side tens of thousands of Americans who gathered from around the country on Saturday, March 17 to participate in the March on the Pentagon, which also marked the 40th anniversary of the March on the Pentagon against the Vietnam War. Anderson lead the march along side Cindy Sheehan, a popular antiwar activist who's son was killed during his service in • Iraq, Iraq war veterans, active-duty service-members, Gold Star families, and veterans from other past and present wars. D,C. protesters marched from the Vietnam memorial, across the Memorial Bridge, and toward the Pentagon through 20 mile an hour winds and a wind chill factor in the teens, as well as receiving discouraging, explicative remarks from pro-Bush demonstrators. "I am a firm believer in the liberation of all human beings regardless of creed, class, race, gender. Liberation is not the goal of the Iraqi occupation!" said Eric Mathis, a graduate student from Appalachian State University in North Carolina, who attended the D.C. demonstration. "I am a long time activist and I feel that this type of activism is conducive for two primary reasons. One, you gain a sense of solidarity with like minded people thus undermining the isolation that one may feel in their hometowns. Two, if and when the media covers events such as these, especially world news, the solidarity mentioned above is disseminated on a larger scale."
