"Students need to make sure to pick the team that will best direct them and where the school goes in the upcoming transition years." LH: As VPAA, I will be working with everyone at UVSC to maintain and enhance existing program quality AND grow new programs in areas of great demand. Jleam Impact Candidates for team Impact are Dan Groves for student body president, Reed Rogers for executive vice president, Marci Stotlar for academics vice president. Team Impact is building their platform around additional scholarships for continuing students. "A lot of the school's scholarships are going to new high school students. We could use more of those scholarships to go to continuing and upper division students to help increase student retention and give students a reason to stay at UVSC instead of transferring somewhere else," said Dan Groves, team Impact's student body president candidate. Groves explained that ideally these scholarships would be given out by departments who know their students best. Also on the agenda is pricing all night school classes the same as in-state tuition regardless of residency. It is thought that if more students were inclined to take night classes it would reduce the volume of students on campus during the day, relieving hallway and (especially) parking congestion. Student fees and budgeting transparency is also an initiative team Impact hope to create. "Student fees rise every year and they want to know why. We will create an accessible link for students to see exactly where their money is going and how it will be used," Groves said. "This transparency will assure students that their money isn't being wasted and explain why their fees rise each year." JD: As the role of VPAA is a sort of liason between faculty and administration, it seems that can be a hard position at times, to work closely with faculty and administration who may, at times, have competing interests and trying to . balance a working relationship between both. Talk about LH: I think both faculty and administration want to serve students well. If you keep that common goal clearly in mind and communication lines open, I think the balance can be achieved. student life are not exactly what you deal with on a day to day level but the student ]body might find it interesting to hear some of your musings on the culture change, if you feel so inclined. LH: I really don't think the students are all that different I think I will find that UVSC, just like UWL, has a preponderance of hardworking and JD: Moving from Wisconsin focused students who to Utah can understandably are intent on making the be a bit of a culture shock. most of their classes and I've been told the student the opportunity to earn body of U of W is known a degree. Team Unite hopes to make academics more efficient and effective for students. "To receive your bachelor's in general academics, UVSC students are required to complete 126 credit hours, which is more than [the credit requirement of] other universities in the state. Why is that? We want to make sure students get the most out of their degrees with the most efficiency," said Kris Coles, student body president candidate for team Unite. Team Unite also hopes to generate that if you would. What do faculty want in a VPAA? And what does a school's administration usually want from a VPAA? school spirit by getting more students involved with UV Athletics. Unite plan to create interest in athletics by holding an "ESPN College Game Day" event to get students excited about attending the games, and to hopefully keep them coming back to games. Groves said that Unite would like to see the students of UVSC circulating more between the different satellite campuses around the area such as the Weber campus, the Mountain Land campus and even the aviation and fire science buildings. "Students who spend the majority of their time at one certain location don't get involved with the main campus as much," Groves said. "So we'll bring the campus to them with shuttles running to LI V o C obttdevvb ovedcui youth, young parents, adults, political refugees, immigrants and new Americans learningEnglish as a second language.
