I All the talk about steroids and baseball is getting so old, but the pot has been figuratively stirred once again with the unbelievable allegations that teammates Roger Clemens and Andy Pettit used performance-enhancing drugs. The Los Angeles Times reported recently that Jason Grimsley implicated Clemens and Pettit in a sworn statement. Grimsley, now out of baseball, admitted to using human growth hormone, steroids and amphetamines earlier this year and was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks as well as suspended from the league. Clemens and Pettit were teammates of Grimsley when they all played for the New York Yankees. Miguel Tejada, Brian Roberts and Jay Gibbons were also implicated in the same sworn statement, according to the L.A. paper. Of course, all of the accused deny the allegation that they cheated. The troublesome thing is, we will never know the truth. Baseball was so tainted over the last few years that fans don't believe anything from anymore when it comes to this topic. This isn't saying that we should believe they used the cheating substances, but it's sad that we have to wonder. The Wolverines are 9-3-1 this year, and have looked very good at times. On the soccer field tucked nicely behind the Education Building, UVSC couldn't manage to get it going. The crowd came ready to support their teams, and the intensity carried onto field even though the Wolverines didn't score. Coach Elton Jazexhiu said, "Overall we did well tonight, but there are still a few things we need to work out as a team. We had just as many chances to score as Weber did; the only difference is that they finished theirs." It was an intense battle from the get-go. Weber put in a couple early goals right at the beginning of the match, and never stopped attacking. The vicious Wildcats tried to pull a fast one by roughhousing their way to victory, being handed two separate yellow cards in their effort. UVSC kept the pressure on Weber State in the second half by being on the attack, led by strong play from Alejandro Gutierrez, Fabian Alvarez and Viktor Bezhani. Both sides showed strong passion, hard work, dedication and exuberance during the match. Coach Jazexhiu was most impressed with the play of the midfielders against Weber State. "Weber is an aggressive team, and their play injured two of our goalies in tonight's match. We were down to our third goalie at the end." One of the keepers injured his knee during the match, while the other dislocated his finger. Coach Jazexhiu feels the need for more wordof-mouth encouragement from the players. He would also welcome any support from the school with open arms.
