UVSC's resident movie critics Luke Hickman and Jason Pyles have provided brief overviews highlighting some of these upcoming films. Friday, Oct. 13 The Grudge 2, PG-13. The curse of rage returns to reveal some of its darkest secrets. Karen's (Sarah Michelle Gellar's) sister travels to Tokyo to investigate what happened to her terrorized sibling. This American sequel has some surprises that vary from its corresponding Japanese sequel, Ju-On: The Grudge 2. Man of the Year, PG-13. What would it be like if Jon Stewart {The Daily Show) were elected president? Starring Robin Williams. Friday, Oct. 20 Flags of Our Fathers, R. Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg and Robert Lorenz produced this World War II drama that is based on the book by James Bradley and Ron Powers. Their film explores the battle of Iwo Jima and the stories of the six men who raised the American flag in that legendary photograph taken in 1945. This precedes Letters From Iwo Jima, which is set for release this December. Marie Antoinette, PG-13. Sofia Coppola's first movie since her 2003. indie hit Lost in Translation telling the life story of Antoinette set to 80s music. The Nightmare Before Christmas 3-D Version, PG. Tim Burton's 1993 hit that conglomerated Halloween and Christmas into a bizarre, animated fantasy returns in a digitally-remastered, 3-D version. The pumpkin king of Halloween Town tries to incorporate and adopt Christmas Town's themes, a task that proves to be difficult for the Halloweeners. The Prestige, PG-13. Director Christopher Nolan {Batman Begins, Momenta) tells a twisted, shocking story of two competing magicians (Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman) in turn-of-the-century London. Friday, Oct. 27 Saw III, R. The initially-indie horror series continues with a new group of victims set up in another sadistic grizzly game. "Oh, yes. There will be blood." Friday, Nov. 3 Boral: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (R) - Sacha Baron Cohen (The Ali G Show, Talladega Nights) plays Borat, an outrageous Kazakhstan! with a documentary filmmaking crew who comes to the "greatest country in the world" - the United States. Friday, Nov. 10 Babel* R. This promising new Brad Pitt/Cate Blanchett film is a sad, chain-of-events thriller. When a vacationing American couple encounters tragedy in the Moroccan desert, they desperately attempt to stay alive. Their plight is intimately entangled with the high-tension, humanistic dramas suffered by a few unfortunate others. A Good Year, PG-13. Director Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe work together again (see Gladiator) in a story about a money-grubbing businessman who wants to sell away his late uncle's vineyard along with the cherished memories he made there. Harsh Times, R. Christian Bale stars as an ex-army ranger, who has returned from fighting in the Middle East only to get tangled up between his South Central gangster friends and the feds. From the writer and producer of Training Day. The Return, PG-13. Horror flick chick Sarah Michelle Gellar stars in another screamer. After being haunted by nightmares of a murder that occurred in the past, she investigates these visions, placing herself in grave danger. Stranger Than Fiction, PG-13. Funnyman Will Ferrell is Harold Crick. Crick has a problem: He (and only he) can hear his life story being narrated by some mysterious, invisible, female storyteller. The narrator is an author of tragic novels and is unaware that her doomed main character is a real person who is helplessly controlled by her storyline. Friday, Nov. 17 Casino Royale, PG-13. Ever wondered how James Bond started his spy career? By the same director as Goldeneye, Daniel Craig (Layer Cake, Munich) takes on the Bond roll as the newest MI6 agent in the prequel to the 007 movies. Fast Food Nation, R. A large cast, including Greg Kinnear, Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke, satirically release the dirty secrets of fast food chains concerning health and environmental dangers. Wednesday, Nov. 22 Deck the Halls, not yet rated. Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick are neighbors who are at war over their outdoor Christmas decorations. One of them has Christmas lights that shine brightly enough to be seen from outer space. Deja Vu, not yet rated. In this stylized action/adventure sci-fi romantic thriller directed by Tony Scott {Domino, Man on Fire), Denzel Washington plays a cop who goes back in time to stop a woman from being murdered. While doing so, a romantic connection sparks (of course) between the two. The Fountain, R. Tom Verde (Hugh Jackman) finds the "Tree of Life." This unusual discovery enables him to embark on a thousand-year search for a way to save Izzi (Rachel Weisz), his true love. Along the way, he leams much about the poignant mysteries of human existence. Let's Go To Prison, R. Dax Shepard stars in this prison comedy about a long-time felon who seeks revenge on the judge that imprisoned him by "helping" the judge's wrongfully convicted son (Will Arnett) survive in the big house. Thursday, Nov. 23 Bobby, not yet rated. This film is directed, written and acted by Emilio Estevez. Bobby depicts the story of Robert F. Kennedy's assignation in 1968. The film, part fact-part fiction, examines those who were at the Ambassador Hotel when Kennedy was killed. Several characters have significant roles; therefore, this movie has an all-star cast: Anthony Hopkins, Sharon Stone, Demi Moore, Helen Hunt, William H. Macy, Ashton Kutcher, Heather Graham and others.
