Show career fair D4 MONDAY • SEPTEMBER 18 -2006 How you can get a dream internship Dan Noakes College Times U VSC is interested in helping students find the best internship that will suite their future goals. Although some may think that they can find a respectable job on their own, UVSC offers help that can expand the career vision of its students. An internship is a job or a service provided to a student to help him or her gain experience in a Certain field of interests. To get started one must know what kind of a career they are looking for. Then he or she must look at the different options that are offered for landing an internship. Cary Boone Jones, director of Internship Services Career and Student Employment mentions a few sources to land an internship. She mentioned the faculty, Career Services and Student Employment also known as CSSE, UV job board, or students can find it themselves. Some might ask, "when is the best time to get started on finding an internship?" Jones suggests that the best .time to start looking for an internship is the end of sophomore year and the beginning of junior year. Lower division students like freshman can take an exploratory internship so that they can determine what career would best suite their interests. Studies have shown that people who have done an internship get a job faster after graduation and get paid more because they have experience. CSSE is a great way to get started on internship goals. It offers help with making a resume, talking to a counselor, and helps students market their information to varies employers. So if making the connection with an employer is out of the question, CSSE will take care of it. CSSE can help students obtain job experience .that normally they could not have. They are located in BA113 or can be reached at 863-6364. Jones says that UVSC would like to have every student to have -practical job experience before graduating. She says "you can go through school and know a lot about school, but a student needs to marry his schooling with what is in the real world". UVSC offers professional engagement so that students can better obtain a highclass job. CSSE is dedicated to preparing students to succeed in the real world. To learn more about the available internships that exist, UV Job Board is a great source to look up all the internships that are available. The web site is www. uvsc.edu/csse. On that site there is a link to go the UV Job Board. CSSE can work with students individually if they have a need that is not found in this particular web site. On Tuesday, September 26 in the Grande Ballroom from 10:00am-3:00pm there will be an internship and career fair. Students will have the opportunity to meet and talk to over 75 employers. It will be a great place to form relationships and learn more about the different job opportunities that are offered. Jones states that "it kind of opens up your world" by allowing students to ask employers how their majors could apply to the jobs that they offer. Definitely the window of job opportunities for UVSC students is wide open. Come talk with a counselor as CSSE and watch as your opportunities for success grow. WANT A CHALLENGING CAREER?
