Show your compu/ A6 MONDAY* SEPTEMBER 18 • 2006 Titans coach gives speech to UVSC students From TITANS page A6 began by saying the strength of our nation is the ability we have to embrace diversity. The coach discussed the resistance he received while trying to unify 106 black and white athletes into one team. As depicted in the movie, he told the audience as he told his Titans, "I don't care if you don't like each other, but you will respect each other." "Young people, the movie Rcmeiulcr the Titans is not about football," Boone said, 'it's a movie about respect, character, and how one can accept the soul of an individual rather than reject a human being based on the color of his skin or religion." He reminded the audience that conflict exists now in many forms, and said that diversity is not a function of race, gender, religion, etc. But rather, diversity comes from inner struggles. Boone quoted from bits of Matthew 5:13-16 with the cadence, at times, of a charismatic preacher delivering a sermon. After his oration, Boone told his admiring audience that he would be happy to sign autographs. One lucky football player asked Boone to draw his favorite play, which he did, explaining it in great detail. When Boone finished the illustration, he said, "I better not sec that on eBay!" Boone was asked how he was able to refrain from seeking vengeance for the terrible treatment he re- ceived as a new head coach. Boone answered with candor and emotion saying that his father gave him a brick and instructed him to throw it against the brick house of the Ku Klux Klan. "Brick against brick won't accomplish anything. Gun against gun won't resolve anything," Boone said. "But if we open up and let them see the beauty inside of us,s" he explained, "then you might get through to at least one person." Although Boone is retired from coaching football, he still coaches audiences with his presentations on respect, teamwork, conflict resolution and unity. The sock it to'em drive Abraham Hernandez News Writer The Utah Division of Juvenile Justice Services invites the community to participate in the Make a Difference Day "Sock It to 'Em Sock Drive." The drive calls for individuals and all types of organizations to collect and donate new socks in child and youth sizes. Every winter, many Utah children arrive at schools without socks to warm and protect their feet. Access to shoes and socks is often difficult for families who are struggling financially. Many families arc too proud to ask for help, or they believe others are in need of more assistance. No child should have to endure this sort of preventable problem. The Juvenile Justice Services' goal is to collect at least 5,500 pairs of socks to go with the 5,500 pairs of shoes the Utah League of Credit Unions' "Warm the Soles" plans to collect. These socks and shoes will be distributed to children and teens statewide. Those interested in helping collect socks for needy children can find a convenient location in their organizations or communities to set up a collection box, collect new socks, and call the Utah Division of Juvenile Justice Services to arrange for pick up or drop off time by Oct. 20, 2006. A box for sock donations is located in the newsroom SC 220 For more information contact Jill Merritt or Linda Campbell, Juvenile Justice Services volunteer coordinators, at (801) 774-8767 ext 510 or (801)4910118. 801-538-4086.
