Show MONDAY • AUGUST 28 '2006 ASUVSC on a 'Mission' to Improve Student Life Eleanor Takahashi Life Writer Even sudden summer showers couldn't put a damper on ASUVSC's student government led welcome week, which included a courtyard presentation of "Mission: Impossible III" on Wednesday, August 23rd. At 9 p.m., over 300 students migrated to view an outdoor presentation of one of this summers hottest shows. When the threat of thunder and lighting followed by a sudden downpour led the ASUVSC's Social Committee to herd the audience (just twenty minutes into the film) into the Grande Ballroom in the Student's Center. Due to the committees previous preparation and team efforts they were able to get all 300 students settled comfortably into chairs and blanketed spreads on the ballroom floor where the movie resumed without a glitch. The massive publicity campaign announcing the student governments Week Of Welcome, or WOW, for incoming freshman and returning students couldn't have hurt. "We are really happy with the turnout," states Jessica Jaynes, head of ASUVSC's Social Com- mittee, "and it seemed that the students were rewarded for their attendance." "I never really came to any of these activities before, but this made me want to attend more," was the praise UVSC sophomore April Baird gave at the end of the evening. When asked about attending the rest of the Week Of Welcome events, Junior Lindsay Arnell said that she'd be there "for sure." At a single dollar for admission with student I.D. ($2 w/out) singles, couples and even families enjoyed quality sound and picture in a safe environment. An army of ASUVSC staff was represented, along with campus security. If you are wondering now why you weren't in attendance, you'll soon have your chance for another viewing. Students will get the opportunity to screen the 2000 Hollywood semibiographical tale "Remember the Titans," inspired by the real life coaching story of Herman Boone, who is scheduled to speak on campus the following day. With the hope of two or three of these showings scheduled each semester, students will have the prospect of an evening of socializing that is both casual and inexpensive.
