With a twinkle in his eye and colorful paint drops on his shirt, Bulgarian muralist Asen Balakchiev spoke with The College Times through the translating help of his son, MiLko. Regarding a completion date, Balakchiev said, "In this profession, your feelings kind of control it, so you can't really go by the clock, but I would predict September." "Right now," Milko explained, "the mural's colors are really bright so my father can put a glaze over it which will tone it down into darker, deeper colors." Racquel Smith Callis, Public Arts Program Director at the Downtown Business Alliance of Provo said, "The whole Balakchiev family are artists; they've been working collaboratively on the project." Recalling the beginning stages of the mural, Smith Callis said, "We asked the Balakchiev's to come up with a mock mural and they See MURAL-B3 Beerfest Luke Hickman Remember that we get fall break and BYU doesn't. "I started painting at age 3 with oil paints, and now, I'm 60. It's something my father passed down to me," Balakchiev said. Milko Balakchiev explained that his family moved to Utah from Bulgaria about two and a half years ago. Because his father still speaks very little English, Milko translates for him. When asked about how long the mural has taken thus far, Balakchiev relayed, "It's been about a month, but In 2001, the comedy team known as Broken Lizard introduced us to their hilarious underground style of film making (Super Troopers) by acting in, producing and directing their own movies. Since then, they've done the same with Club Dread, a comedic over-the-top mockery of horror movies, and directed the big-screen remake of the 70s TV show Dukes of Hazzard. As if they couldn't get any better, they went ahead and hit one out of the park with their new highly offensive comedy Beerfest. Beerfest offers us up a tale of two brothers, Jan and Todd, who set out to fulfill their grandmother's request to go to Germany to scatter their grandfather's ashes. Little do they know, they are to celebrate him at a dangerous annual underground beer-drinking contest known as Beerfest. Picture the Olympics with drinking games. After losing a challenge by their prideful German cousins, they are forced to return to America with their heads lowered from shaming their grandfather's name. With a year to "get in shape" for the next Beerfest, Jan and Todd recruit old college drinking buddies to join them in their training and gaming. One thing that everyone should know about Broken Lizard is that they are a group of five guys who take part in every aspect of production. When they write a script, they each revise it over and over again until they all agree that it has reached perfection to their standards. Some of their scripts go through over 100 drafts before they consider it finished. It is completely obvious that Beerfest was conceived in the exact same way of production as their previous movies. Each scene is well polished and perfect. Beerfest is one of those movies that defies everyone's judgments from its previews. You think you're getting a movie where every good joke has been spoiled by the clips on the previews.
