Show Fantasy football kick off MONDAY • AUGUST 7 -2006 /port/ Ideas on how to pick a quality team this season From FANTASY-A9 That could mean more passing and more fantasy points. 2. Tom Brady, New England: Brady, a three-time Super Bowl winner, is always steady no matter who is on the team and has avoided injuries during his career. 3. Carson Palmer, Cincinnati: His injury is the big question but he has the weapons to get it done. 4. Matt Hasselback, Seattle; They give the ball to Alexander a lot which could cost fantasy points. 5. Jake Delhomme, Carolina: Keyshawn Johnson and Steve Smith. Receivers can sure complain but the good thing is that they always want the ball. Top five: 1. Chad Johnson, Cincinnati: His TD celebrations may be toned down but he could be in the endzone regularly. 2. Steve Smith, Carolina: The former Ute gets open especially near the goal line. When he gets a catch he has the chance to score on every play from anywhere. 3. Terrell Owens, Dallas: He usually has no problems during his first year with a team. On the field he his dominating. 4. Antonio Gates, San Diego: A quarterback's best friend in the red zone is a good tight end. Gates is the best in the business at tight end. 5. Jeremy Shockey, New York Giants: Big-mouth Shockey has great hands and goes up and makes catches. Kickers get the most points for your fantasy team when it comes to special teams. A lot of field goals usually aren't good but they are when you have a fantasy kicker making them. Top five: 1. Adam Vinatieri, Indianapolis 2. Neil Rackers, Arizona 3. Jason Elam, Denver 4. Mike Vanderjagt, Dallas 5. Jay Feely, New York Giants When you need just a few points to win one week a key interception or fumble recovery could be the difference. Top five: 1. Chicago Bears, they gave up the fewest points in the league last year. 2. Pittsburgh Steelers, Their defense makes plays when it counts. 3. Indianapolis Colts, Their offense is on the field so much that there defense has improved a lot. 4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, A team that has always been known for defense. 5. Carolina Panthers/ Baltimore Ravens, Both teams can stop teams but the Ravens have had little offensive help in the past. Courtside Condominiums FREE Cable and Internet! In unlikely circumstances Real Salt Lake's Jeff Cunningham scored late on two penalty kicks in the 90th and 95th minute of stoppage time to hand DC United a 2-1 loss, just their second of the year. "In the end we had a lit bit extra and it paid off," Real coach John Ellinger said. In the 90th minute is when the match hit two useable twists. As midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy performed a give-and-go with forward Jeff Cunningham he was tripped up by defender John Wilson. The referee awarded a penalty kick and Cunningham hammered it home to the top right of the goal for the equalizer. Five minutes later Wilson would again make a crucial mistake as he fouled RSL's Chris Klein in the bottom of the box when Wilson went to the ground to tackle Klein, again the ref awarded a penalty kick for Cunningham. Cunningham would choose the same corner and the same result. Perkins again jumped right having no chance of stopping the game winning goal. The ref blew his whistle and stoppage time was over. The stadium erupted as RSL ended its two-game winless streak and gained ground on fellow bottom dweller, the Los Angeles Galaxy with 20 points each. The second half was a different story from the first as RSL went from having zero shots on goal to eight. But D.C. goalkeeper Troy Perkins seemed unbeatable as he stopped them all. Even in the clutch he seemed invincible making a diving save that kept an Atiba Harris' header from tying the game in the 82nd minute. "It is the first time in my career for this to happen. The boys deserved this win tonight," Cunningham said. "Tonight was a confidence builder. Hopefully it will help us to get on a winning streak." D.C. United's young superstar Freddy Adu said, "It goes to show that anybody can beat anybody on a given night in this league." Until the last ten minutes defeat was on thfif^J for Ellinger's Straf club. United showed exce passing as .its offense^ put continual pressure OnScott Garlick, putting four^rfhots on goal to Real's in the 36th minute ^j one on the score.bbar0.as forward Jaime fc|(jceno tapped the ball into4 C ^ d e open net. T?i:f.V The goal was set ur/wlien United's Christian Gomez hit a through ball to midfielder Joshua Gros just outside the penalty box who then crossed the ball 90 degrees to Moreno; setting Moreno up for the goal giving D.C. a 1-0 lead going in to the locker room. Despite the early lead D.C. couldn't hold off Real for the entire game. "In the second half, we played backwards, backwards, backwards/ 1 D.C. coach Peter Nowak said. While DC United will remain on top of the standings Real ended a 14-game unbeaten streak for United. RSL is now 5-10-5 in MLS play. "We are not the worst team in the league," Ellinger said.
