Thursday couldn't be more stoked and ready to go out on the road as ever and couldn't be happier than to be out on tour with bands like Rise Against and NOFX, or even June. They have formed quite a family out on the road this summer. In fact, they have become such good friends that Rise Against and Thursday will be touring in the fall together. Shows have not yet been scheduled, but they are getting ready for that to happen shortly. Bands such as Thursday fall off the radar all the time and very few recover, but Thursday has beaten the odds and come back to become an even better band than they set out to be. Thursday has proven themselves to be around for a long time and only getting better as they go on. The upcoming shows that you can't miss are: on August 12th Alice Cooper will be at Saltair, $31-535; on August 16th, Def Leppard and Journey will be a USANA, $30-$76; and on September 6th at the Avalon the band Mae, tickets are $13. Keep it real and support your local musicians., Life Writer One thing that really sucks about Hollywood is that they find something that is cool and popular, then they milk it to death. I'm talking about the Ocean's movies (yet another Ocean's movie is now in production, tactfully called Ocean's 13). And we've got the Pirates movies. George Lucas has been doing it for nearly 30 years now with Star Wars. It's sad to say. Will Farrell's acquired humor is being done to death. In his latest movie, Talladega Nights, Farrell play Ricky Bobby, a boy who grew tip saying, "I wanna go fast," to the point that he became a NASCAR driver. When the idea for this movie was pitched a few years ago, all the producers had to say to the studio reps was, "Picture Will Ferrell as a NASCAR driver," and Colombia Picture green-lit the package on that line alone. That's really all you need to know about The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Either you like his humor and know that it would be funny based on that idea alone, or you don't. If you don't like his humor, then there's really nothing in this movie that's going to appease you. How many times can Farrell play a dumb man with dumb friends and keep it fresh? This time he's really ridiculous because instead of playing a chauvinistic anchorman in the 70's, he's playing a brainless, southern, white trash leadfoot. Where Talladega Nights really shines is in its co-stars. Gary Cole, who many know as Bill Lumbergh from Office Space, plays the best dead-beat dad. His performance is golden. John C. Rei.lly, one of those guys you see and like in every movie but don't know his name, plays Ricky's best friend Cal. And the most surprising is Michael Clarke Duncan as the head of Ricky's pit crew. Any time those guys are on the screen you know you're going to laugh. As always, Farrell's latest is funny and entertaining. But just like Owen Wilson, Farrell needs to stop playing the same character in every movie he writes. It's time for him to branch out and start writing something along the lines of the quiet indie films he has been doing on the side. |
