E. 6<SG0 5 Toylorsville/W. Volley Enrollment down even more than last year From ENROLLMENT-AT Another reason enrollment may be down could be what some are referring to as a "good economy." "Seems to be a tight year, a good economy is hurting us," said Brown, "when we see a good economy, there seem to be less students in school." "Right now people can get jobs," said Makin, "a few years ago they couldn't, so kids would go to school. Right now, it seems like they are waiting to °o to school." Regardless of the reasons, enrollment seems as though it will stay down. "We'll break 20,000 students," said Brown, "but I don't think we'll see growth. Every school in the state is hurting, it's not whether or not we will see a drop of enrollment, but rather how much." UVSC is not alone in the .' 4700 S 567-4300 South Salt Lake 2301 5 300 W i6 261-6500 Syracuse 1693 W. 9700 S 774-28OQ drop in enrollment, almost all other schools in the state are experiencing the same phenomenon, according to Lundell, "It's not a big surprise, but we are concerned." Makin doesn't seem to be worried. "I'm more encouraged today than I was last week, because the daily numbers are increasing daily, just like they did last year." Learning the hazards Firefighters gather to learn new developments BonnTurkington News Writer Attracting over 500 firefighters from around the state and even across the country, the Utah Summer Fire School will give them the opportunity to learn about new developments in everything from arson to wildfires. For two days near the end of August, twenty-seven classes will be taught both at UVSC and the fire and rescue academy near the Provo airport. Classes include everything from courtroom preparation to mock terrorist threats, involving some "of the most physically demanding training available. According to Steve Lutz. the outreach director at the academy. "Less than half of what firefighters do is fight house fires, and the point of the training school is to give them the most up to date information on topics from emergency response, to HazMat and even terrorist attacks." Though it will be drawing a big group of firefighters, not every person in every department will be able to attend. But Lutz hopes that wont stand in" the way of others learning the new information. "The main thing we want is for everyone to go away with a great deal, of new knowledge that can be passed onto their respective departments. By sharing the information they will learn, all the members of a department can increase their skills and knowledge with the most up to date information, without having actually been there. Not just firefighters will benefit from the classes, because of low fees and voluntary registration the event will draw everyone from police officers to EMTs. "The idea was to make it accessible to anyone, and each year we add new things and rotate events to bring new people" Courtesy Photo Firefighters practice using fools in a mock car accident. t "A really important component of the event is to make sure people doing the hands on events are safe. We expect it to be hot and humid, so we will actually have EMT's on the scene to watch for things such as heat exhaustion, and injuries especially around the more rigorous events," Lutz said. If you're interested in learning more, a large exhibit will be on display in the hall of flags during the event. And the bachelors degree program offered at UVSC is being expanded beyond just fire management to all emergency services. • • t> i Light a fire in her. 6oW$mitb I 'Utah County's Largest Jewelr Visit us online ac www.netxnews.n > coll E W E L E R £ ummt Send ad info, to anthonrot |
