"Sin City" is a three-act story based on Frank Miller's graphic novels "The Hard Goodbye/1 "Big Fat Kill," and "That Yellow Bastard." For those of you who don't know geek terminology, a graphic novel is a nice way of saying a comic book. Robert Rodriguez, the director of the "Spy Kids" movies and "Once Upon A Time In Mexico," asked Frank Miller to co-direct the film to help preserve the stories. Rodriguez's plan was to "translate" the novels and not adapt them into a motion picture, making "Sin City" the first 100 percent true-to-the-comic movie. With Frank Miller at his side, nothing could go wrong. "Sin City" is filled with an amazingly long list of credits. In "The Hard Goodbye," Mickey Rourke plays a beast of a guy who is avenging the death of the only woman who has ever given him attention. In "That Yellow Bastard," Bruce Willis plays Hartigan, a good cop in a corrupt town. With one hour left until his retirement, Hartigan's got to stop a demented man from killing his next victim, an 11year-old-girl. In "Big Fat Kill," Clive Owen plays Dwight, a just man trying to stop Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) from killing innocent hookers. Actors like Josh Hartnett were so interested that they play nameless roles that are only on the screen for a few minutes. Quentin Tarantino even directed a scene of "Big Fat Kill" for only one dollar (The credits for this movie go on for days). What makes this film so unique is the look that it gets from being almost entirely filmed in front of green screens. Rodriguez utilized this relatively new technique to help create the feeling of a film noir and to portray the images straight off the pages of the comics. The stylized action of "Sin City" is comparable to that of Tarantino's "Kill Bill" films. The violence is over the top and not meant to be taken seriously. The only main difference between their action sequences is that "Sin City" is almost all black and white, cutting the disturbing edge that "Kill Bill" inflicted on moviegoers. In "Sin City," when you see someone's skull cut in half, you don't squirm. When someone gets his or her arm shot off, the stub squirts what appears to be white or yellow paint, making it feel even less realistic and'more cartoonlike. This is the best movie of the year so far. If you want to see a film that's nothing like anything you've ever seen before, something that is so cool that you'll want to see it again and again, then definitely see "Sin City." A how-to guide to a great summer mix John Garlock Life Writer With the sunny season swiftly approaching and the realization that every past summer has had keys which open the floodgates of fun, the key is music, or more specifically songs. Summer songs. I call them. The simple fact is we haven't had a solid summer song since "How bizarre?" by OMC, "Butterfly" by Crazy Town, or my all-time favorite, "Summer Girls" by LFO. I figure this summer to be a washout, as were the last four, so I am predicting a "summer dance CD mix" craze to sweep across the country. Utah, lets start the bandwagon and not jump on it for once. The following are aboveaverage artists and/or suggestions to consider when creating your "summer dance mix." A good dance mix must include more than two music genres. You would hate to alienate your listening audience, especially if you're at a rather lame dance party where Bob Saget just so happens to be DJing. With a wide spectrum of dance tunes, one is able to breathe new life into any social setting. "Twist and Shout" by The Beatles is a classic ice-breaker with a rather high screamalong-with rating, always an added bonus. Speaking of twisting, "Let's Twist Again" by Chubby Checker is bound to extinguish the thought of pelvic grinding in any boy's mind. After finding a few good oldies dance tunes, the next ingredients are a few choice 80s new wave smash hits. "99 Luftballons" by Nena is a great international jam, wfrich will have your friends smiling a slurred sing-along.
