Show Your Campus PAGE A6 MONDAY, APRIL 11, 2005 Fully integrated UVSC's Integrated Studies program lets students create their own degree Where to take your problems and concerns If you have a concern about how the school is running or you notice a problem that is in need of fixing, there are four simple ways to bring that issue to the attention of student government. The first way is through your school specific senator. In each school there is a senator that attends faculty meetings for that school and the Academic Senate. From there, the issues are taken to the Student Executive Council and dealt with by student government. The job of a senator is to be aware of any issues in their respective school and to bring those issues to the attention of student government when necessary. If you don't know who your school senator is, you can find out in the student council office SC105. The second way is similar; you can go directly to the student council offices and make an appointment with a member of the executive council. While the council is usually quite busy they may be able to make time depending on the severity of the issue. They may also refer you to your respective school senator. The third option is one that guarantees confidentiality. There are a number of suggestion boxes strewn throughout the school. There is at least one in each building. They are checked frequently and those issues are addressed by the Academic Senate, and if necessary they are directed to either the respective school faculty or to the student council, The final option is to take it to the ombuds. This option still guarantees confidentiality, but gives you the added benefit of personal expression in a face-to-face meeting. From a meeting with me I will take it to the appropriate body, whether that body is student council, judicial affairs, or anywhere the issue needs to go. I will also keep in contact with you to let you know what progress I am making. As always, if you have these issues you can come and talk with me or you can use any of the above-mentioned ways to resolve any issue on campus. Integrated Studies allows students to cater their degree using programs that would not necessarily be found together. It is not uncommon to see Integrated Studies Majors with combined emphasis in dance and behavioral science, to art and leadership. The degree requires students to complete 18 hours from two different areas of study. They complete their degree with a capstone, which is generally an intense thesis-driven paper that combines the two areas of study. Integrated Studies students are also required to take the course IS 3000. These courses vary every semester, providing students with the opportunity to do research in an area of study they may not be familiar with, by using the skills they have acquired within their fields of study. One section of IS 3000 being taught this semester is "Borders and Boundaries." Program director Scott Abbott teaches the course. The focus of this semester's course is Integrated Studies Director Scott Abbott leads a discussion in his IS 3000 class "Borders and Boundaries."
