Mike Taylor (RIGHT) was voted into office as VP of Clubs back in March. Incoming Student Body President Jared Sumsion (LEFT) switched Taylor to Executive VP and appointed Marie Amos to the vacant Clubs post. This switch has prompted some to question if the move was constitutional or not. And/ Hunt NetXNews Student Government switch brings up constitutional questions of clubs, the President shall chair the appointing committee consistent with Article III. The nominee selected must be ratified by the Student Council." It is that last line that troubles Tippets. He pointed out that the Student Council never ratified the choices. "They [student government executives] need to have the students' best interests in mind," Tippets said. "It is one of those areas where it's not very clear," Cory Duckworth, Vice President of Student Affairs and Strategic Planning said of the constitution's directions for filling Executive Position vacancies. "It's my understand- "Changes" cont'd from page AI and hours of deliberations we came to the conclusion that this would be the very best for the students of UVSC." Amos was aware that some were unhappy with her appointment. "But nobody has come to me," she said. Tippets referred to a line in the constitution that outlines how student government vacancies should be handled. In Article IV, Section II, the third paragraph states that, "In the event of a vacancy or either the Executive Vice President of Academics or the Executive Vice President of Student Activities, or the Executive Vice President ing that it is vague." As an administrator, Duckworth's responsibilities include overseeing student government. Tippets, who ran against Sumsion as a candidate for student body president tempered his criticism by adding that he didn't lack confidence in the new executives. "Personally I think Jared [Sumsion], Karlie [Coles], Ashley [Rutgers] and Mike [Taylor] will do fine," he said. "They are fine individuals." Dr. Brad Cook swore the student government executives into office Wednesday night during the wolverine achievement awards. that element out of it, though there would be prizes. In the meantime, we've made those shifts and changes and have continued to offer Texas Hold'em but without being contrary to the gambling statutes." Legal play of Texas Hold'em has been occurring on campus throughout the current school year. The April 13 tournament will end Texas Hold'em at UVSC. This has some students upset. Chris Finch, a student who works in the intramural office said, "I think it's a bunch of crap. You take away something that's extremely popular among the students, and tell them they are not allowed to do it. Intramurals is here to help the students enjoy life on campus. If we can't provide events to them that they find entertaining, what are we doing?" Bo Earls, Director of Intramurals, has said that while he will stand behind administration's decision to cancel Texas Hold'em, he does not necessarily agree with it. Milt Gale, Assistant Coordinator of Intramurals noted the concern he heard from participants. "A lot of students are very perturbed that it's gone away, I mean it's free, it's fun. It gives them an outlet to come and have some fun." He did add that most students seem to understand the reasoning behind the decision, namely the controversy surrounding the college since Michael Moore visited campus last October. Texas Hold'em is growing in popularity across the country, especially on college campuses as an intramural sport as well as a continuing education class. problems that it creates for us, it's not worth it for the institution to create an environment that becomes actually a very negative thing for us in terms of potential funding and potential enrollment from people who would choose not to send their children here." One of these tournament players is Student Body President Jim Bassi. Bassi came in second place in one of the recent tournaments. "I don't have a problem with our Texas Hold'em tournaments. It's card playing, not gambling." The gambling element is what has Duckworth concerned. "Irrespective of the numbers, because of the legalities and the perceptual are encouraging individuals to develop a taste for illegal activities or Las Vegas Style gambling activities is not a good perception for us to be creating for our community." Bassi said that if students are concerned with losing this activity, they should speak out. letting student government know how they feel.
