To reduce the wait time for initial service, students may schedule a 30 minute consultation appointment and will be seen within 72 nours of completion of first contact. Twenty minutes of personal data entry is required prior to the consultation appointment. An array of services are provided from structured workshops pealing with depression, relationship skills, stress management or sleep hygiene; to therapy groups dealing with interpersonal process, men's issues, women's issues, body image or emotional awareness and regulation; and traditional services such as individual or couples counseling. Self-help materials are also available in the CAPS library or on-line and REACH Peers are available to help reduce test anxiety with stress management and relaxation training. All communication with CAPS is held in strict confidence and for students who need additional services, referrals can be made to other offices within Student Services such as the Disability Resource Center, Academic Resource Center or Wellness Center. For students needing assessment for ADD or learning disabilities, initial screening is provided by the Disability Resource Center with testing at CAPS at a reasonable cost to students. Student Health Center physicians can also monitor medication needs for CAPS clients. For initial appointments, students are encouraged to drop by TSC 306 or call 797-1012. With an MIS degree, you will be able to connect technology to your community and organization, making a world of difference - enhancing security, reducing energy consumption, improving health care, and advancing learning and education. In tight economic times, there are always jobs for MIS majors. Whether you want to live in Utah, in the U.S., or abroad, MIS is considered a "5-star" career with the strongest employment outlook and highest wages. Employment of computer and information systems professionals is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Government Occupational Outlook Handbook (2010-11 edition). The Handbook states "Excellent job prospects are expected as organizations continue to adopt increasingly sophisticated technologies." Individuals who become experts in MIS are qualified for a large number of prestigious, wellpaid jobs. Some of the entry-level positions MIS graduates from USU often accept include the following: Web Developer creates applications hosted on web sites, requiring strong programming skills and understanding of database principles. Security is important to protect integrity of web sites, and user interface design skills help a developer create attractive, functional web sites. Database Administrator (DBA) monitors, maintains, and optimizes critical organizational data to ensure efficient and accurate storage and retrieval. Understanding security and advanced data communication topics are important in the confidentiality and protection of data integrity. • Project Manager coordinates IT projects, working with end users and technical ment In- staff to ensure delivformation erables meet business items needs and are delivered on-time and within budget. E-commerce mgt. and security topics are helpful to understand web-based architectures and enforce project standards and quality-assurance procedures; IT Consultant/Business Analyst examines and aligns business processes with information technologies, implementing more efficient and effective practices. Security and data communication infrastructure issues as well as the ability to analyze large amounts of data are helpful. Strong communication skills prove valuable, as the consultant/analyst serves as a liaison between end users and technical professionals. E-learning Manager creates training modules for web-based training development projects. Understanding instructional design and training and development principles are required. Strong analytical, communication, and user interface planning skills are important in producing well-designed applications. The MIS Department is in the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. MIS students gain a broad business perspective that includes analytical, teamwork, project management, and people skills. As an MIS major, you receive training in fundamental MIS topics in 4 required classes and 4 electives that you can tailor to your individual career interests, and then apply in an internship to help you gain real-world experience. MIS students learn by doing. Most classes include experience-based learning, where you are placed in an actual work environment or a situation that resembles one. The projects help you develop an entrepreneurial spirit and see how software applications make a real difference to people right away. The MIS Department also offers a minor in MIS that makes it easy for you to complement another major with enhanced technical and analytical skills.
