Mr USU held Wednesday was attended by about 1,500 students and the theme was "I Just Can't Wait to be King." KRISTY JORDAN photo Hills -J.J-'. Haunted Forest is offering frightful times. Ten USU men vied for the judges' approval for the 2008 Mr. USU pageant Wednesday but only Tyler Tolson walked away with the title. This year's theme, "I Just Can't Wait to be King," came from the Disney movie "The Lion King." The 2008 Mr. USU contestants were Brett Healy, Erik Wynn, Jeremy Winn, Jonathan Kidd, Josh Nagao, Lee Cannon, Michael Green, Nate Necdham, Rich Wilkinson and Tolson. The contestants spent a lot of time together in preparation for the pageant, and Tolson said they depended on each other and learned from one another during that time. "I learned how to calm my nerves to the strength of other people," Tolson said. "The guys backstage were really supportive." Dione Garlick, junior in political science and one of the event's narrators, said about 1,500 students attended the event. The pageant started with a movie by John Reynolds which introduced the pageant's theme as well as allowed each contestant to introduce themselves. They wore animal ears and performed a dance to "I Just Can't Wait to be King" choreographed by Alyson Shepherd, president of the Student Alumni Association. "Be careful, Broadway, USU is coming," said Garlick s fellow narrator Kyle Milne, senior in public relations. Contestants modeled swimwear for the next portion of the pageant. The swimwear varied from Green's merman fin and coconut bra to Winn's blue speedo with a stuffed Big Blue head in front. Healy shocked the audience with his swimwear which displayed an 'A' for Aggies shaved out of his chest hair. During the talent portion, the contestants were able to show off their abilities in music, comedy and art. Cannon kicked off the talents by singing and playing the piano to "Come What May" from "Moulin Rouge." "Most babies come out crying," he said. Almanac Today in History: In 1901, a 63year-old schoolteacher named Annie Edson Taylor becomes the first person to take the plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel. In July 1901, while reading an article about the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, she learned of the growing popularity of two enormous waterfalls located on the border of upstate New York and Canada. Strapped for cash and seeking fame, Taylor came up with the perfect attention-getting stunt: She would go over Niagara Falls in a s barrel. The Howl, Utah State's annual Halloween party and commonly proclaimed "biggest party in Utah" gets even bigger this year. With a number of new additions, 2008's event offers something for everyone, said Tyler Haws, ASUSU activities director. Many students are excited to attend the Howl. "Heck yeah I'm going to the Howl," said Ben Sampson, engineering student. ASUSU and everyone involved with the Howl hopes most students share Sampson's enthusiasm, and much effort is being done to make this year's event nothing short of legendary, Haws said. One of the more noticeable additions to this year's Howl is a haunted maze located in the Fieldhouse, he said. Students arriving will enter through the Fieldhouse and can choose whether to pass through the maze or skip straight to the party in the TSC. The maze's layout is being designed by the Engineering Counsel, Haws said, one of many examples of club participation in this year's Howl. "One thing we've tried to do this year is be as inclusive as possible," Haws said. Inside the TSC, students will find traditional activities in the ballroom, refreshments and an improv troup in the Hub, USU's Full Circle dance group, an area with a backdrop for taking pictures, costume contests and games sponsored by LDSSA in the basement hallway, Haws said. "We've tried to cater to as many students as possible," Haws said. "A lot of people like to watch scary movies, a lot want to dress up, others want to play games or dance." Bands playing at this year's howl include the Rock Bandits, a Led Zeppelin cover band, TRUE VOU BETCHA/ High: 59° Low: 30° Skies: Sunny through the weekend. .com \lSeeHO}VL,page3 True Aggies are we, Palin and me Weather Archives and breaking news / always ready for you at playing at 9:45 p.m., Love You Long Time playing at 11:30 p.m. and another band still to be announced playing at 8:30 p.m.. Haws said. Recycle Percussion, a "stomp style" percussion ensemble, will play two shows, one at 10:30 p.m. and the other at midnight. If watchine scarv movies is how students like to spend their Halloween, or if they just need to rest their dancing legs, two films will be featured; "Hocus Pocus" starring Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker, and Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," starring Jack Nicholson, Haws said. "It's just going to be a great time," Haws said, "an amazing experience, something the students will remember." Michael Murray, activities vice president for LDSSA, said that this year's Howl has a lot of MOCK UPS OF PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES Barack Obama and John McCain, as well as vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, were on display in the Financial Aid Office dressed in full Aggie gear in support of Homecoming Week.
