That is what the Aggies accomplished Monday night in the Spectrum by beating the Fresno State 79-66, to finish the season with FRESNO a 17-0 home record. It was only the fourth time since the 1957-58 season an Aggie team has achieved that. "That was awesome that we were able to protect our home court," said senior guard Jaycee Carroll, who had a 33-point performance and was one of three seniors honored before the game. It was those same Bulldogs who came into the Spectrum last year and spoiled Senior Night by picking up a 71-66 victory over the Aggies. It was the last time an opponent has come into the Spectrum and won. Senior big man Stephen DuCharme, who was also honored before the game, said he couldn't have been more pleased with his last performance in the Spectrum. "I have enjoyed it here," said DuCharme, who scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. "I love the fans, and I couldn't ask for anything more out there." ST. 66 Carroll agreed with DuCharme. USU 79 By G. CHRISTOPHER TERRY staff writer Bell and Miller not enough for Fresno There was no Quinton Hosely, but Fresno State brought back two players who played key roles in trashing USU's senior night last year—point guard Kevin Bell and shooting guard Eddie Miller. Both played well enough to keep the game interesting, even though the remainder of the Fresno State lineup had a forgettable performance. Starting forward Nedeljko Golubovic was l-of-4 shooting and grabbed one rebound in his time on the floor. Hector Hernandez, the other starting forward, led the 'Dogs with eight rebounds but was just 2-of-5. Swingman Dwight O'Neil was 1for-8 shooting. Fresno coach Steve Cleveland was left with Bell and Miller. Bell played all 40 minutes and wore Aggie point guards Kris Clark and Desmond Stevens out. Miller, a 3-point specialist with a high release point, was 4-fof-8 shooting treys. "I'm sure they're glad (USU senior) Jaycee (Carroll) is a senior," USU head coach Stew Morrill said, "and I'm damn glad Kevin Bell is a senior." Bell scored 31 points on 13-of-19 shooting, driving into the lane whenever he wanted. He went to the free-throw line only three times all game, a rarity for a penetrating guard of his type. As a team, Fresno had 11 free throw attempts, half as many as the home team. Bell had four assists and four turnovers in the game, but three of those turnovers came in a spurt from the 12:36 mark to the 12:13 mark, when the quicker Stevens had just been put into the game and was doing a better job staying in front of Bell than Clark had been. With Bell in a funk, USU got out to its biggest lead of the game, 29-10. Then Bell woke up and helped fuel a Fresno run which got the visiting team to within 37-30 with one minute to go. By the second half, everyone in the building knew that one of Fresno's two guards floating around the perimeter had to shoot for the 'Dogs •I See NOTEBOOK, page 11 Planet "That was a good way to finish," Carroll said. "The biggest thing was that we won." The win came in large part to Carroll and DuCharme as the Aggies (10-4 in Western Athletic Conference action, 21-9 overall) were able to jump out to an early lead. They held onto it for the entire game. In the first three minutes of the game, Carroll hit three 3-pointers to go along with a couple of DuCharme baskets to propel the Aggies to a 13-7 Towc/zBase NABC puts Carroll on second team BY USU ATHLETICS The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced Tuesday its Division I All-District teams and Utah State's Jaycee Carroll was named to the District 14 second-team for the second year in a row. Carroll, a 6-foot-2-inch, 175-pound, senior guard from Evanston, Wyo., currently leads the nation in 3-point shooting at 50.5 percent. He also ranks second in the nation in free throw shooting at 92.2 percent and is 13th in scoring at 22.7 points per game. The NABC recognized 150 student-athletes from 15 districts, who are now eligible for selection to the NABC Division I All-American team which will be announced at the end of the season.
