At a fundraising "Rally for Ryan" event this Saturday, more than 25 Cache Valley community members, including two USU professors will be thrown from the bungee tower - either that, or they will have to open their wallets. Businesses, schools and organizations all over Cache Valley have been raising funds for Ryan's Place Park, with the idea that what they raise, their boss will either have to match or be tossed from the bungee tower at the Celebration Centre Saturday. Whether he is paying up or falling down, Shannon Browne, a social work professor, said he's happy to set aside his fears and help out. "I'll pretty much do anything for charity, or for a laugh. Wait until you see my bungeejumping costume!" Browne said. "I'm happy to help, I just hope I live through this experience to see the park built. I'm horrified of heights, terrified of dying and humiliated by public appearances...so it should be a great day for me." The bungee tower is the first in the world, according to Sandra Checketts, Sports Tower Inc. owner, who will be overseeing the jumps on Saturday. Sports Tower Inc. has bungee towers in Japan, Korea, India and across the United States -including the first bungee tower ever built at the Celebration Centre. The USU Country Swing Club is also raising funds to toss one of their teammates, Rachaal Erekson. Erekson has been involved NEW EMAIL FOR STUDENTS! Les Roka, a journalism professor in his last semester at USU, has been given the bungee challenge by the journalism and communications department faculty and staff as their way of saying goodbye, they'll miss him and good luck to him. "I'm excited to leave with a bang," Roka said. "It's nice to support a community project and, in a way, leave my mark here in one final swoop." Roka, together with Troy Oldham, professor of the Public Relations Agency class at USU, leads a group of six USU senior students responsible for public relations for Ryan's Place Park. "Ryan's Place Park gives the students a chance to get deeply involved with their community, but also firsthand experience working with a real client and the media," Oldham said. "The work these students are doing is equal to that of professionals in their field." Anyone can still donate to Ryan's Place Park and see a professor tossed by taking donations to the JCOM department on the third floor of the Animal Science building. The Rally for Ryan event will include discounted ticket packages for the thriller rides, mini golf and go-karts at the Celebration Centre as well as the Toss Your Boss activity. Donations will also be accepted at the Celebration Centre all day Saturday. The event will be from 10 am to 11 pm. The Celebration Centre is located at 1903 S. 800 West in Logan, and the number is 752-4215. New students will create their accounts on the Google system, but current students are not required to switch to the new system. Whether a student creates a new account or not, the school will send e-mails, updates and announcements to whatever address students enter as their primary e-mails on Banner. According the IT Web site, one of the main issues with the old system was the variety of domains used by staff and faculty. Many new departments or employees did not have the features they needed and created e-mails of their own, making many interdepartmental communications difficult. IT's Web site states that IT anticipates that all those with trouble will utilize the new system when it becomes available, quickly correcting all the problems that come from having so many different systems. "A lot of students are using Gmail already, so this will just enhance it for everyone," Richard Hart said. "And Google will actually be able tofixany problems we have."
