Women's tennis falls at Weber BY JOEY HISLOP Staff Writer It was a bit of deja vu for the USU women's tennis team Thursday as they lost 4-3 at Weber State in a match that mirrored the two teams' first meeting in Logan ear- lier this season. The similarities began with the doubles competition, where, as they did back in February, the Wildcats swept all three matches. This time, however, the scores were much closer and the Aggies were playing without senior Andrea Barker, who was away receiving ah award. At the No. 1 spot for the Aggies, the duo of senior Jill Smith and junior Lauren Monson, who usually compete at the No. 2 spot in doubles, held their own against Weber's Elena Smit and Inalise Pienaar, but lost, 8-5. In the No. 2 spot, things were a little closer. Once known as a lovable loser who went a dozen years and 42 majors before figuring out how to win golfs biggest events, Mickelson captured his second straight major Sunday at Augusta National without needing a nail-biting finish. He closed with a 3-under 69 for a two-shot victory over Tim Clark, and his second green jacket in three years. The only surprise was the way he won. There were no thrills for Phil, rather calculated shots that forced Fred Couples, Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh to try to catch him. Instead, they stumbled along with three-putts and a litany of other mistakes that allowed Mickelson to stroll up the 18th fairway with no worries. He won his first major at Augusta two years ago with an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole. He added the PGA Championship last year at Baltusrol with a flop shot to 2 feet for another Gymnasts compete at n BY UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY Athletic Media Relations MorryGash/AP Photo PHIL MICKELSON GETS his Masters Green Jacket from last years champion Tiger Woods after winning the 2006 Masters golf tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., Sunday, April 9,2006. decisive birdie on the final hole. Mickelsons only bogey on a breezy afternoon at Augusta National came when it no longer mattered. He missed the 18th green to the left, chipped to 20 feet and settled for two putts. This time, he didn't leap with arms thrust into the air, as he did two years ago. Mickelson simply smiled and walked off the green and into the arms of his wife and children. The scrimmage was capped by the only scoring play of the afternoon as tight end Rob Myers pulled in an 11-yard pass from Bryan Black to cap a 65-yard drive on the final play of the day. Myers, a 6-4, 230-pound redshirt freshman from Houston, Texas, caught one of the five completions the Aggies recorded. "Myers, a year ago was a redshirt," said USU head coach Brent Guy. "He has really come on. He has had a great off-season. He did drop one, but he did catch the one in the endzone. We are excited about him because we think he is a tight end, who can stretch defenses vertically, especially when matched up with a linebacker. He is going to be real hard to cover." The Aggies attempted 10 ! passes on the day with Leon Jackson III starting the scrimmage. Jackson, last year's starter, hit just one of three attempts, a three-yard loss to Kevin Robinson. mile, high-banked track that is marking its 10th season of racing; none won from the pole position. Stewart had been the one cruising ahead of the field until lap 302. That's when the reigning Cup champion came up behind the lapped car of rookie J.J. Yeley on the backstretch. That allowed Kahne to catch up and even nose ahead, though he didn't officially lead until a few laps later.. Kahne crept alongside Stewart and was on the champion's bumper several times before finally taking the lead. Kahne went around Stewart in the fourth turn at the end of lap 307 and made the final pass right at the line. "It was fun racing like that. Obviously, if there had been 80 laps to go, neither one of us would have been racing each other that way," Stewart said. "Definitely, he was better. We weren't. We were extremely loose there at the end." Denny Hamlin was fourth, his first career topfive finish. Kevin Harvick was fifth, followed by Jeff Burton, Scott Riggs, Joe Nemechek, Mark Martin and Bobby Labonte. Martin, the 47-year-old Roush driver who initially hadn't planned to race this season, had his fifth top10 finish and is fourth in points. Martin insists that this will be his last full-time Cup season no matter what happens. . ^ Carl Edwards was in the s'econd spot on lap 257 when he got loose, spun out of control and was done for the day.
