"PREEMPTIVE HCRITICS "Into the Blue" The tagline for M G M ' s latest release, " I n t o the Blue," is "Treasure has its price." That price is apparently 1 1 0 minutes o f Paul Walker. But even this 2-Fast-and-2-Furious Deedle, his undoubtedly wretched dialogue a n d his halfhearted heroics during some completely contrived chase scene couldn't steer m e off course a n d away , f r o m the proverbial prize at the end o f this rainbow. S:; Is it a movie about surfers? I couldn't tell you. Is it a movie about sharks? I don't know. Is it a movie about sunken treasure? It doesn't really matter. 7 As far as I c a n tell, it's a m o v i e about Jessica A l b a rrt a bathing suit a n d I preemptively love it. The performers include singers, dancers and traditional musicians, are led by Theo Shanab, who has won first place in the World Folklore Festival Traditional dances from various regions in Mexico will be presented. According to the New York Times the Folklorico de Mexico is "currently one of the most beautifully costumed folk-dance companies to appear in New York in recent memory. The smiling performers had the audience clapping and humming along several minutes into the program." The program is hosted by Gewald Management and has traveled throughout the world including Europe and Asia as well as their many shows in the United States and Canada. -steveshinney@cc.usu.edu "The Greatest m Game Ever Played" The movie's name is "The Greatest Game Ever Played." I'm not sure what the greatest game ever played was, but chances are this one wasn't i t Stop me if you've heard this: It's a true story from the depression. People are depressed, out of work and slightly discolored. But a spunky competitor, who no one thinks can win, is going to teach us all to believe in our dreams. Vy It's a good story. The problem is, it was a good story in "Iron Will/' and"that was like a thousand of these movies Ever since "Seabicuit" did so well, the ever-creative Hollywood think tank started cranking them out again. Now Disney is giving us "Golf-biscuit" in which the same thing we've seen before will happen, only this time oh the golf course so it will take longer ana not have much action. For predictability and just plain cockiness, I preemptively hate this movie. -steveshinney@cc.usu.edu THE PREEMPTIVE CRITICS WRITE KNEE-JERK ANALYSES OF UPCOMING FILMS BASED SOLELY ON HEARSAY AND MOVIE TRAILERS. Watching Web-coms I'm a little hes- Steve Shinney itant to recommend this week's site. It's not that it's not good, I enjoy it a great deal. It's just that they totally ripped off my idea. ! Weekly OK, that's a jflfeb Watch bit harsh. Movie freaks deciding to make their own sitcom is hardly an original idea. The guys behind this week's recommendation did put their own unique twist on the idea though; they actually did it. "What the Muffins?" is a Webcom with currently four episodes available for download. The plot of the show is pretty simple: three guys live together as roommates ana hijinks ensue. As is often the way, the hijinks are what are worth watching. The show is written and directed by brothers Jeff and Chris Smith and their good friend Matt Champoux. Considering these three guys at the start were completely self-taught, the episodes are put together amazingly well with sound effects, digital alteration and a sound track. The series' pilot shows the modern emotional pain and anguish born from LAN-parties. The next two episodes are shorter than the pilot and focus more on humor than storytelling. The most recent episode is a combination of humor and storytelling. Some of the humor is for the kind of people who would watch an online sitcom, but it's all very well done Unfortunately the guys original plans of making eight episodes a season have been cut snort by everone's worst enemy, reality. The Smith brothers are now in film school and no longer have the time the show requires. They will be posting one more final episode in the near future. After the show airs, they plan on posting projects from their schoolwork on trie Web site, So check out" What the Muffins." Episode running time ranges from 13 to 30 minutes. The episodes are found at www.whatthemuffins. com. The muffins are waiting. Steve Shinney is a junior majoring in computer science.
